About this deal

House Of Mortal Sin marked the end of Pete Walker's trilogy of well-regarded "suburban horrors", made up of House Of Whipcord and Frightmare. Much criticism has been leveled against this film for its unabashed attacks on Catholicism, but it's really Walker's trademark amoral approach to filmmaking that elicits a strong urge to take a hot bath after viewing.

In 1983, when Cushing acted in Walker's final film, The House of Long Shadows, Walker learned that Cushing actually liked the script, but had other film commitments. That night, while Jenny is out, Meldrum gains entry to her flat and assaults her friend Robert, believing him to be Terry. We are aware that there are films on the site that were added when the criteria for the inclusion of locations was very different from today and, as a result, there may be scenes missing from some productions. With a whammy of gruesome, giallo-esque violence, firm footed pacing and an ending that shows just how mad Walker can get it's a standout in his filmography. Please do not forward additional screen captures to us but bring the detail to our attention, for we do, and are, 're-addressing' these older entries as time allows.

The story concerns a concerned young girl who goes to revelation at the local church; alas, the sexually-angry priest she acknowledges to becomes fascinated with her. Then our star "Jenny" (Susan Penhaligon) meets up with her old school buddy (Norman Eshley) who is now a priest.

The jury's still out on House Of Mortal Sin (aka The Confessional), but you can't deny that it's entertaining. If cerebral horror doesn't scare you, grab these films and enjoy them before someone in authority decides that the truth cannot be handled by the masses. When Father Cutler confronts Father Meldrum about the tape, Meldrum plays another tape that makes Jenny look like she is lying. With films like FRIGHTMARE, HOUSE OF WHIPCORD (both 1974) and SCHIZO (1976) under their belt (THE FLESH AND BLOOD SHOW [1972] and THE COMEBACK [1977] are two of the very few of Walker's 70's horror films that McGillivray did not work on), each dealing with dark secrets and a hint that the Church may have too much power over everyone's life (both moral and professional), Pete Walker and David McGillivray made thinking-man's horror films of the 70's, even though they didn't skimp on the gore. The next morning, Jenny makes her way to Father Meldrum's presbytery, where he lives with with his frail Mother and Miss Brabazon the housekeeper.

The next day, Meldrum invites Jenny over to his presbytery, which he shares with his frail, bed-bound mother and his housekeeper, Miss Brabazon. So I’m scrolling through Arrow’s “leaving soon” section and a bunch of Pete Walker films are there and somehow I didn’t even realize they had been there to begin with? there are more pros than con with " House of Mortal Sin," but Walker feels constipated with this effort, unsure if he wants to court controversy or make a cracking chiller. First the boyfriend is beaten with an incense burner and then buried alive in a grave, then poor unlucky Bob is smothered in his hospital bed, Meldrum found reading him his last rites after doing the dirty deed. House of Mortal Sin (also known as The Confessional and The Confessional Murders) is a 1976 British horror slasher film directed and produced by Pete Walker.
