About this deal

With the help of a courageous Fellowship of friends and allies, Frodo embarks on a perilous mission to destroy the legendary One Ring. Well controversy once again rears its head in the extras section, although to a far lesser degree than that examined in the video section. If that weren't enough, the disc wraps up with the epilogue “The Battle for Helm's Deep is Over…” (9 min. As with the extended DVD editions, the films have been split over two discs, so no information has been lost in compression. Assisted by a Fellowship of heroes, Frodo Baggins plunges into a perilous trek to take the mystical One Ring to Mount Doom so that it and its magical powers can be destroyed and never possessed by evil Lord Sauron.

By then and soon after, there will either be a reboot, remake, or some new HD media will come out making all previous discs obsolete! The Costa Botes documentaries accompany acclaimed special features by Michael Pellerin from the original extended cut releases to make this the most comprehensive The Lord of the Rings compilation ever. The culmination of the vast and varied features of this extended edition results in a longer, deeper and more detailed journey into Middle-earth than before. The scene explains why Faramir would want to give the Ring to his father to prove himself, a plot-point created by Jackson to increase the drama to which fans of the book lamented, feeling it was done at the expense of Faramir's character. On the one hand, The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy – Extended Edition boasts the most complete, definitive extras package of any previous release.Documentaries Cover the Filming Process, Visual Effects, Editing, Music and Sound, and a Touching Tribute as Cast Members Bid Farewell to Middle-earth and the Characters They Played. I can’t remember exactly what the theatrical presentation would have looked like in the cinema – all of a decade ago – but it’s safe to assume this colour timing change is completely new.

The final commentary is with the cast, including Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Liv Tyler, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Christopher Lee, Bernard Hill, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Karl Urban, John Noble, and Andy Serkis.

Instead, this massive FIFTEEN disc bundle actually only includes SIX blu-rays – the other NINE discs are just DVDs (and it should be noted, although the Blu-rays are Region Free, the SD-DVDs are US Region 1). This 15-disc set included the original 9 special-features DVDs with over 26 hours of spellbinding behind-the-moviemaking material, including the Costa Botes documentaries.

These versions have new editing, additional special effects and music, and also more scenes and content than the theatrical versions. If you prefer those over the extra-long extended editions, you might want to hold on to your previous set.It seems that if a rating for this edition only was calculated, it would be much closer to 5-stars than the current 3. Each of the movies is more than 3 hours long, and considering the very high quality of picture and audio, they had to divide it to two DVD's, with the other two DVD's dedicated to appendices containing many superb extras. Tolkien’s Middle-earth won 4 Academy Awards®* and earned 13 total nominations including Best Picture.

The remastering process, supervised by Peter Jackson himself and director of photography Andrew Lesnie, involved a brand new digital transfer from the original 2k source, and some tweaking of the colors and contrast. It’s not like Fellowship suddenly looked like The Matrix; the green tone tended to be pretty light, and the movie already used a stylized palette. The set boasts more than 26 hours of additional content, highlighted by the rare behind-the-scenes documentaries created by Costa Botes, the filmmaker given unprecedented access to the set of each production by Peter Jackson. Still, without further confirmation, one must reluctantly assume that the colour changes are all intentional on this director-approved release.
