About this deal

He immortalised Berlin in two short, brilliant novels both published in the Thirties, Mr Norris Changes Trains and Goodbye To Berlin, inventing a new form for future generations - intimate, stylised reportage in loosely connected episodes - Daily Express You may also be interested in. While the social situation is depicted in some detail covering living conditions of both the poor as well as the rich, the political situation is always in the background - from where it sometimes pops up as the main story itself, especially in the second book. Norris is a serial fabricant, incapable of facing or telling the truth about his business dealings, his past or his financial realities; he’s a really amusing character. The bestselling LGBTQ+ graphic novel about life, love, and everything that happens in between: this is the fifth volume of the Heartstopper series.

In my opinion, Isherwood’s use of deception and uneasiness throughout the novel is symbolic of how the German population felt in pre-war Germany. When I went round to the flat that evening, I found him with Arthur in the dining-room, having just finished a substantial supper. M Godding Books Ltd is an internet book business running from Wiltshire and sending books all over the world every working day. The downside to all these classics being read is that it reminds you of those you haven’t yet got round to!My dad was born in 1931, and a lot of the food he liked was the food his mum used to make when he was growing up, based around rationing and lack of fresh goods. In that sense he reminds me a little of Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby; and in fact Norris is, like Gatsby, the real heart of the story (albeit a far more, shall we say, morally doubtful character than Fitzgerald's creation). It is a heartless fairy-story about a real city in which human beings were suffering the miseries of political violence and near-starvation.

At one point in the novel, Bradshaw reflects on his impressions of Mr Norris, a very telling passage as it turns out. Jonathan also specialises in cosmetic surgery around the eyes (blepharoplasty) and is a member of the British Oculoplastic Surgery Society. Isherwood ensure that we are constantly told half-truths and Norris’ ‘riddles’ ensures his deceptiveness. Some very light spotting to preliminaries, and soil spot to bottom edge, but pages otherwise clean and unmarked. As William confronts him over his sins we are told he ‘…looked…like a spaniel which is going to be whipped’, which also links to my later point on submission, and subsequently leads to William half forgiving him and even helping him! An excellent example, tightly bound and clean throughout (offsetting to end papers); jacket spine panel lightly tanned and gently rubbed, else about Fine. Many of his works are more like diaries than plot driven stories, but the journey is very enjoyable even if the destination isn't very exciting. Yet Isherwood had no interest in making Bradshaw heterosexual either, so the Narrator has no scenes of a sexual nature.
