Nightwing: Year One is a solid and entertaining origin story revealing Robin's tale of independence and self-discovery. I know that is not a major spoiler to some of us, but it was entertaining to see it happen in a different medium. They're worthy continuations of the Batman story from Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's excellent Long Halloween and Dark Victory.

Given Wally's mentor, it's not a shocker he'd be so congenial, but given Dick's, his nice guy routine is more of a surprise. I know some aren't a fan of McDaniel's style but I think it works well with acrobatic characters like Nightwing. He launched Way of the Rat in June 2002, Brath (March '03), The Silken Ghost (June '03) and the pirate comic El Cazador (Oct '03), as well as editing Robert Rodi's non-Sigilverse The Crossovers. His Punisher OGN Kingdom Gone (August, 1990) led to him working on the monthly The Punisher War Journal (and later, more monthly and occasional Punisher titles), and also brought him to the attention of DC Comics editor Denny O'Neil, who asked him to produce a Robin mini-series. Robin moves from boy to man wonder as he takes the guise of grown-up crime fighter Nightwing in this origin story. This story exists in the post-Crisis and pre-New 52 world and tries to sandwich itself in-between a handful of issues of Batman and the seminal Judas Contract of New Teen Titans.

A lot of great Bat Family moments especially with Dick and Barbara, I love their dynamic in the early years of Gotham before the Bat Family got overwhelmingly larger. Although the quiet scenes are there to give development to Dick Grayson as a character, this book doesn’t have many action scenes in it, although the last few chapters are about him meeting Jason Todd and helping him pass “the gauntlet,” the final test to become Robin. Anyways, I love the way Superman treats Dick Grayson as an equal even here, love the way Dick kinda hits on Lois Lane, and love about a zillion other things about those two characters teaming; just a great dynamic.

The tensions between Batman and his young protégé are nicely portrayed, as are Grayson's feelings of regret and bitterness following the break. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Right now, you most likely have some time to get caught up with new things in pop culture and also revisit old favorites in your collection. It was published in Nightwing (Volume 2), and retold Dick Grayson's transition from Robin into Nightwing.Fans of the Dick Grayson character are familiar with the broad strokes of Nightwing’s development, but most of that history still focussed on Grayson’s time as a sidekick, and as Robin. This is one of those stories that make you sad that you're finished and, since it's just a graphic novel, you're finished pretty quick. Dick Grayson is an interesting character; they transitioned him from being Robin because of how the character was being used at the time, but the story reasons for him becoming Nightwing are very interesting and tie back to his need to be a hero.
