About this deal

My flatmate is a costume designer for the Royal Opera House so now I have all these fantastic fashion coffee books in my flat that I’ve always wanted to get my hands on - and Savage Beauty has long been on the top of that list.

Inside photographer Solve Sundsbo's full-page mannequin photographs make the designer's creations float, dance, and strut.Graff, Randall Griffey, John Guy, Navina Najat Haidar, Se´n Hemingway, Marsha Hill, Alison Hokanson, Melanie Holcomb, Timothy B. McQueen was controversial and even challenging (sounds like both professionally and personally at times), but he was undoubtedly a genius. I found it to be pretty fascinating stuff - it is kind of amazing the reactions that some of the pictures can evoke. The front cover of the exhibition catalog takes a page straight out of the Mapplethorpe playbook: a plastic lenticular panel features a frontal headshot of the designer that, when moved, morphs into a chrome-plated skull.

Lee did care about the commercial side of the industry, but what most people remember are the shows. The most radical designs of his career are presented here, with critical analysis perfect for any arts or fashion library. Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty celebrates the astounding creativity and originality of a designer who relentlessly questioned and confronted the conventional parameters of fashion to express ideas about culture, politics, and identity. The majority of the content here is photographs of exhibition pieces, posed on mannequins, shown context-free save for occasional quotes from the designer. Drawn primarily from the Alexander McQueen Archive in London, with some pieces from the Givenchy Archive in Paris as well as private collections, signature designs including the "bumster" trouser, the kimono jacket, and the three-point "origami" frock coat will be on view.Published to coincide with the exhibition the title opens with a preface from Andrew Bolton, curator of The Costume Institute of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and an introduction by Susannah Frankel, Fashion Editor with The Independent newspaper and friend of McQueen. Lush photography blended with essays provides a 360-degree view of Englands most audacious designer . It is a captivating tribute to the designer's most radical and beautiful creations, from his impeccable tailoring at Savile Row through to his most avant-garde collections. This weighty tome is published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York to accompany their spring 2011 exhibition in celebration of McQueen’s work. He is currently the subject of a spectacular exhibition of his works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and this book serves as a catalogue for that exhibition.

Garrels, Gary, Jon-Ove Steihaug, and Sheena Wagstaff, editors; preface by Karl Ove Knausgaard; essays by Patricia G. I do know, though, that this book pulls off something kind of extraordinary: convincing me not only that McQueen deserved a posthumous retrospective at the Met (I was never much in doubt on that score) but also that McQueen was as pure and complete an artist as ever lived.Technical ingenuity imbued his designs with an innovative sensibility that kept him at fashion's vanguard. La manera en la que él concebía el mundo, el arte, la alta costura y la manera en la que redefinía los patrones, las formas, las siluetas, los colores, los conceptos, y como ejecutaba sus ideas es más que admirable. I was wondering if the book features the spine “corset” or the horned jacket from “It’€™s a Jungle Out There”……. There is a fine Preface written by Andrew Bolton who curated the exhibition, an Introduction by Susannah Frankel, an interview by Tim Banks with the now almost equally famous Sarah Burton (designer of Kate's Middleton's Royal wedding gown).
