About this deal

Towards the beginning, Gemma is friends with Biscuits which is not so much shared by Alice, but this changes when the running away happened (the disliking for him became mutual), however as time slowly passes she realises what he did was out of care, and he just wants his special friend Gemma to be safe and happy. The trouble with being a child is that you aren't really in control of the important things, and everyone likes to think they are in control of the things that matter. Having found a new friend, Alice invites Gemma to stay only for Gemma to throw a cake in the face of the new friend because she does not like her. I have really enjoyed Bad Girls by this author, but two girls who live near each other and share a birthday, grow up with nothing else in common at all, no common interests or behaviour, yet they are best friends.

However, Gemma grows insecure when Alice is excited to show off her new pink bedroom and large house. Gemma often frets that Flora is trying to "take Alice away from her" and becomes highly suspicious of them together. She is fairly tomboyish, hyperactive and clumsy, who enjoys football, bike riding and spending time with her Grandad. Firstly, they try to run away together to London however, this plan is scuppered when Biscuits, the cheerful, chubby boy in their class, tells his mum when he realises what they are doing. If you've got a best friend you will be able to imagine how Gemma and Alice feel when Alice's parents decide to move a long way away, to Scotland: I took a deep breath, as if I was about to blow out all the candles on my birthday cake all by myself for the first time.Upon arrival at Alice's new house the two share a happy reunion and Gemma is allowed to stay for the day. In Best Friends, Gemma and Alice have been together since birth - literally, they were born on the same day and have been inseparable ever since, despite being complete opposites (Gemma is loud, selfish, and bossy, while Alice is timid, meek, and sensible).

The only reason I gave this book four stars is because I feel like the book is very short for my age and it only took me two days to read; if I was Jacqueline I would probably take at least 100 pages simply talking about all the important events they've had with each other. The two are polar opposites; Gemma is a tomboy who likes playing wild and exciting sports, while Alice is girly and loves ballet and the color pink.Alice and Gemma were born on the same day and even with very different personalities were best of friends. Girls keeping their families going, girls trying to get away… Jacqueline Wilson’s written about them all! This could be a good talking point for a class discussion especially if the book is used as a course reader for all the children to enjoy. I didn't really like the morals in the book - feeling like you can't move on from a friendship or have other friends, eating everything in sight to the point of throwing up because you won't politely say no, an unwillingness to share, etc.

She is Alice's best friend and is devastated when she learns that Alice is moving away to Scotland, having seen each other nearly every day since the cradle.Gemma is a rather feisty character; a tomboy who loves to get messy and always seem to end up breaking the rules. But when Gemma arrives she is confronted with a potential threat that is, Fiona, Alice's new friend.
