About this deal

I get that this is a "dark" romance and secret societies allegedly do all kinds of fucked up shit, but come on! The story was slower to progress, depravity, disquiet, some push and pull, and immeasurable spice intermingled with the intrigue of the sub-arc (or main arc depending on perspective).

The beginning of this story finds us meeting Cora bender a young woman in a claustrophobic marriage who is starting to exhibit strange behaviours particularly around her husband. The Sinner is of a society very different from ours, their rules extremely barbarous: it's eat, kill, fuck, sleep, of course people growing in that society has no problem adapting to it. Her closeness with her father creates a complex relationship with him, whilst he is kind and caring towards his daughter, his failure to take firm action in the face of her mother Elsbeth's more extreme behaviour makes him a weak figure, difficult to maintain respect, love and affection for. Whatever it is that she doesn't want known is held close, she's desperate to obfuscate, confuse, deny, avoid. There was a love story underneath all the wickedness — Elli always loved Sin, and he was protective of her (not always outwardly). In fact, I would highly recommend you read this one after dark to avoid side eye or awkward conversations. As spine-tingling as it is mind-jolting, The Sinner showcases Tess Gerritsen in peak form—bringing her intimate knowledge of the dark depths of criminal investigation brilliantly to bear. Maybe it will come across easier because names will be changed, but being an American not familiar with more common German names I had a hard time keeping up with everyone.

I really struggled to connect with all aspects of this book, I felt particularly distant from the character’s emotions even though I could so clearly see them.I guess it has something of the German frankness in the way sexuality and family dynamic is portrayed. Question about the end: Did Frankie's father insert heroin into Cora for 6 months against her will or did he just eff up her arms to make it LOOK like she was a heroin addict? I'm so pleased they made Cora and her husband more likeable and more conflicted characters than the novel originally has them. But the investigating detective is baffled by her statement that she hasn’t seen the man before; when she refuses to explain her motive, he. He wants Elli and he will have her but that's against the society rules which has dire consequences.

We first meet Dostoevsky starving in Wiesbaden, having gambled away all his money, writing frantic begging letters to friends, acquaintances and ex-lovers to pay off a hotel bill.I want to add that if you HATE (in all caps) this book and say that this is a confusing mess that you couldn't finish I wouldn't blame you.
