About this deal

Appropriately enough, the idea for Tusk originally came about on Kevin Smith’s SModcast back in 2013, with the director and his friend Scott Mosier finding out about a supposedly real ad where a landlord would set up a lodger for free if he agreed to dress up as a walrus.

The Schlock Pit The home of film critics Matty Budrewicz and Dave Wain who, for the best part of a decade, have parlayed their shared, lifelong obsession with horror, B-movies, and direct-to-video shenanigans into a writing career. With Don's recent health troubles and their acquisition of Trick or Treat, any other pending projects may go on a backburner or get pushed further out. Minor issues aside, the largest complain from me is the ample use of Digital Noise Reduction that is at play here. In the case of LEMORA, I will hold the old Synapse DVD - which I've had 19 years now - dearly until a Blu-ray or UHD comes out.

So now Synapse is going to pour all their efforts into Trick or Treat or other newer acquisitions while older acquisitions like Deadly Spawn continue to get pushed back further and further. The meteorite soon crashes down pretty close to their campsite, which puts an end to the festivities. What goes around always seems to come around again, and it may not be long before we find ourselves watching strange creatures from beyond the stars wreak havoc on small, unassuming towns. While I've never seen "The Deadly Spawn" before, I can't imagine this Blu-ray accurately represents the feature as it was originally exhibited.

I mean, the concept alone is terrifying enough if you dare to take it seriously and contemplate the body horror of an irreversible transformation at the hands of a madman. A grinning homage to the murky monster efforts of the 1950s, "The Deadly Spawn" has also retained the pacing and fluctuating sense of suspense from the era. When a meteorite crashes in a remote forest, a hungry alien species is unleashed, bent on gobbling up anything stupid enough to stand in its way with its enormous, unholy mouth. I admit I have a soft spot for this one, not just for being one of the rare evil djinn movies that go full-blown creature feature, but also for being set in my hometown. Meanwhile, a group of kids try to figure out how to stop the growing menace, including three high school students and the younger brother (Charles George Hildebrandt, Tim’s son) of one of them who just happens to be a geeky horror movie buff (gee, I wonder why I loved the movie so much when I was a teen! Blood flows at the drop of a hat, faces get tore off, and heads are severed, but the film still retains a certain naïve charm that sets it light-years apart from today’s awful torture-porn movies.

This creature feature wins entertainment points for its title alone; there are no monkeys here, let alone a blue one. The participants are honest about the feature, but the tone is generally celebratory, sure to please fans.Local News Segments (40:32, SD) stitches together a few news profiles on "The Deadly Spawn" and Bohus from the New Jersey area, highlighting the promotion of the film, with the producer out in front, attempting to charm people into a ticket sale.
