About this deal

This edition updates the story to include the 2007-08 season, the story of the Play-off final at Wembley and the GBP 60m wonder goal that took Hull City into the Premier League. So come along, enjoy a great atmosphere, share the company of one of the club’s living legends and pick up an exclusive version of his brand new book “DEANO: Life after football….

Anyone who loves the real game of football - hard, fast, muddy, sometimes bloody and with flashes of brilliance - will love this book. A privilege slightly dampened by the fact that they also chose 10 other clubs in their career with the same impact. However, as Windass has absolutely no edit function, it is surprisingly revealing of that period at the club.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Because he was out of the side, his former club Bradford City, now in League Two, and League One club Leeds United both made bids to sign Windass. The early part of the book is like a skimming stone dancing across a mill pond, it bounces along at some pace, but never gets into any real depth.Deano talks about life as a young boy growing up playing on the streets beneath the stadium he got to play the game he loved, a game that then defined him for a lifetime after being crystallised with a volley in front of thousands of fans, some who travelled from those very streets to see him smash in a 30 Million Pound Goal at Wembley. After he was left out of the squad to face Everton on 21 September 2008, he held talks with manager Phil Brown, [39] following which he vowed to stay and fight for his place. His early career started with a traineeship at Hull City, he initially did not make the grade as a youngster and was released. This sent Windass on a path back to Hull (via a couple of other clubs) where he gained prominence by larruping in the goal that took The Tigers to their first season in the Premier League in 2008.

Windass is one of many who bounced around that network of managers and coaches including; John Dreyer, Chris Hargreaves and Billy Whitehirst, who is barely mentioned in the first 240-odd pages but contributes a whole chapter at the end of the book. In May 2008, Dean Windass scored the winning goal in the Championship Play-Off Final at the new Wembley, that took Hull City, the hometown club he supported as a boy, into the Premier League. For me, there was no real urgency in reading Windass’ autobiography, partly because of the unsavoury connotations of the subtitle. He came out of retirement and played for Barton Town Old Boys before joining Scarborough Athletic on a game-by-game deal. The highs and lows of a career that has taken him from nonleague North Ferriby United to Hull City, Aberdeen, Oxford United, Bradford City, Middlesbrough, Sheffield's Wednesday and United, and back to Bradford again. But what happens when all that goes away, the phone stops ringing, and you find yourself naked, empty, and scrambling to find yourself again? The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Windass remained a controversial character and in September 2006, on FIFA Fair Play Day, he was accused of grabbing fellow professional John Finnigan by the testicles during Bradford City's 2–1 win over Cheltenham Town.

Windass also had two spells at Bradford City, where he became the club's third-highest scorer of all time. He is understood to have applied for the post, stating that his recent retirement as a player was purely coincidental. In August 2010, Windass came out of his retirement to sign for the North Lincolnshire semi-professional side Barton Town, managed by his former teammate Dave Anderson, on a game-by-game deal.
