About this deal

For personal use, oscillation isn’t quite as important; however, the best bladeless fans will oscillate between 180 – 360 ° . The filter is also really easy to replace, with the casing around the bottom of the fan coming away very easily. Air enters the air at the base of the fan and is then pushed through a set of blades inside the fan. I also considered aesthetics, how well the design fits into your home, and whether or not it comes with changeable colour options to suit your decor.

When summer temperatures climb, having a cooling fan to hand can make it a lot easier to work, relax and sleep.

This Dimplex Black Tower Fan is a bargain cooling companion that has three speed settings and a remote control. One thing to remember is that while fans cool you, they don’t actually reduce the air temperature in the room as an air conditioner would, unless you do one of two tricks. If a fan has only three speed settings, the leap between each option will be more noticeable – you may find only the lowest option is sufficiently quiet. It has a sturdy base that will prevent it from toppling over, and it looks good in the corner of almost any room. It’s worth pointing out that, though 30dB is very quiet, there are quieter fans (like the Duux above) and its 38 Watt motor is not the most powerful.

Plus, the fan is height-adjustable, so no more awkward balancing on wobbly surfaces to get the perfect angle. Secondly, look for a quiet fan: generally they range between 20dB at low fan speeds to 70dB at high speed. How much electricity a fan uses depends on its wattage, how long you use it for, and the cost of electricity. The MeacoFan 1056, which also comes in desktop version for less, is proving very popular this summer but misses out on a higher spot on this list because it lacks a wider range of features and is surprisingly heavy – but, on the other hand, it’s significantly more affordable than the chart-topping Dyson and more powerful, too. In fact, the only reason it’s not at the top of this list is that it’s less powerful than the Dyson and takes a certain amount of assembly – although I dealt with that in less than five minutes. If the main thing you want a fan to do is not take up too much space as it quietly does its job in the corner, Dimplex’s super-skinny and catchily named DXMBCF is the one to go for. Even the 'blade-less' Dyson fan has blades hidden in the stand as this is how the rapid airflow is created. There are also handheld fans, handy in a sweltering tube train, but so low-powered that we don’t review them here. I considered the overall design, features, ease of use, energy efficiency, and the value for money spent.
