In popular culture we present them (and homeless people and Robin Williams) as if they have wisdom to impart, but are never explicit about what that is because it is not possible to come up with anything coherent, at least not that pertains to anyone living in reality. Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly said that the film was "glib, shallow, and monotonous" and "reduces the tumult of the last few decades to a virtual-reality theme park: a baby-boomer version of Disney's America. It is interesting to note that in a film viewed by so many so fondly and with such reverence for its title character, Forrest seldom smiles.

The performance is a breathtaking balancing act between comedy and sadness, in a story rich in big laughs and quiet truths. Director Robert Zemeckis presents a heartfelt look at life's special moments in Forrest Gump (1994).After months of routine operations, their platoon is ambushed while on patrol, and several members of the platoon are killed in action, including Bubba. By the end of the film, he is engaged to be married to his fiancée Susan and is sporting "magic legs" – titanium alloy prosthetics that allow him to walk again. After Rain Man told the story of a savant, Warner lost interest in the picture, and by 1990 the project was in turnaround. He initially wanted to ease Forrest's pronounced Southern accent, but was eventually persuaded by director Robert Zemeckis to portray the heavy accent stressed in the novel.

On Disc Two is the half-hour feature Through the Eyes of Forrest Gump, which plays like an extended EPK, as well as four short niche featurettes guaranteed only to interest hobbyists: The Magic of Makeup, Through the Ears of Forrest Gump (Sound Design), Building the World of Forrest Gump (production design), and the most interesting to the lay person, Seeing is Believing, which deconstructs 11 visual effects, including two that didn't make it into the film. He lives in Greenbow, Alabama, with his mother, who runs a boarding house and encourages him to live beyond his disabilities. Gump's core character and personality are also changed from the novel; among other things, his film character is less of a savant—in the novel, while playing football at the university, he fails craft and gym but receives a perfect score in an advanced physics class he is enrolled in by his coach to satisfy his college requirements.During basic training, he befriends a fellow soldier named Benjamin Buford Blue (nicknamed "Bubba"), who becomes a close friend and convinces Forrest to go into the shrimping business with him after their service. This makes Forrest Gump — without a doubt one of a handful of the most popular, beloved, and acclaimed pictures in recent memory — an interesting case-study in the mass appeal of pretty, but empty, gestures. Hall (young Jenny) and Michael Conner Humphreys (young Forrest, whose performance went unchanged from test to screen), and two clips of Hanks interacting with a young and charismatic Haley Joel Osment auditioning for the role of Forrest's son. I haven`t listened to the commentarys yet, so can`t comment on them (hey - sometimes its hard to find that amount of time in a block!
