The lightly-textured matte covers are a beautiful dark chocolate brown and the durable Smyth-sewn binding allows pages to lay flat so that your drawings can spread across the pages. I have a pocket version that I've used as a portable notebook and I've used a number of the spiral 10" x 7 " landscape books with 50 sheets (100 pages). Will take pencil crayon, light watercolour wash, some markers (bleed through expected) and maybe acrylics with gesso.These sketchbooks bothered me for a while as they have a very light grey natural linen fabric cover which I thought would be filthy in no time. I realize I'm being persnickety, and have mostly been using Canson watercolour at home (but spirals) and Strathmore 500 but thats soft cover and gets destroyed in bag, and really want hardcover surface without having to glue a cover onto it. This was given to me at the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Amsterdam, and is created by an interesting company. This journal features archival paper that is excellent for watercolor, gouache, acrylic, graphite, pen and ink, colored pencil, marker, pastel and collage. This means that a 184lb paper may be the same thickness as a 140lb paper where reams of different basis sizes were weighed. The pages are hand torn with a deckle edge and the paper grain is parallel to the binding on each page.

Mine is a soft cover so it is relatively light and quite a good size to carry around - rather like a B5. I was delighted that the Perfect Sketchbook project moved to Etchr Lab, and they have released a range of sketchbooks that make high quality watercolour sketchbooks available on a regular basis.
