It was only today that it occurred to me that Mo's female voice is likely a stand-in for that a prepubescent boy, and the object of her hero worship is dead - having been hanged for stage coach robbery. A gorgeously warm, funny book about everything a friendship can be – for anyone who's ever had a friend.
I have even talked the head into a little revamp of the library so that we can display them properly! I liked the way Squirrel approached Bear on this matter and the look that Bear gave his friend, it made me smile. The expressions on the characters' faces and the body language is subtle but easy for children to point out - chicken feels sad here, squirrel is being mean here.

He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. And afterward during the class discussion I hope they talk about how it's okay to take a break from best friends and get some alone time to pursue your own passions or hang out with different friends and not feel bad about it.In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. Bear doesn't seem to know his own strength or how much space he takes up and finally squirrel snaps. At the end of the book, my kids and I talked about how important it is to treat our friends with kindness and respect but how it's also OK to ask for space and "private" time. On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
