I also liked how some of them were rather mysterious and remained that way throughout the entire story. While the mysterious paternal figure certainly helps Grace out, providing protection for her and her children, I didn't like him at all and he seemed less believable than most of the other characters. That despite skipping the massacre, she still living in it as well as coping with the fact that her husband is gone forever. Not just because I'd spent almost the best part of a day reading, but this book is one hell of a roller-coaster that will keep you guessing and second guessing right until the end.
