About this deal

A theodolite was secured to the top mounting plate of a pillar so that angles could then be measured from the pillar to other surrounding points. The observant of you will note that very close to Marsden there is also the trig pillar of Krives just East of Deer Hill Reservoir. Thanks to the construction of a paved path and moorland restoration work Black Hill is now grassy again. However, as anyone in the South Pennines knows, if you see a perfectly straight waterway marked on a map it’s an old waterway conduit and as such is highly likely to have a path running alongside it. Trig located near pond which was full of ducks today original plug good views depite drizzle trig has cracks on sides.

Once at Haigh Gutter it’s possible to drop down the path into Marsden if you wish to cut the route short. Starting in Marsden village, the joy of this route is that it is possible to do as much or as little of it as you like. There’s two at the top of Wards Stone in Lancashire - one at each end of the summit plateau - which I’d say is also very unusual.

The Standedge Trail after Black Moss Reservoir can be used to head back downhill to the village, as can the path from Haigh Gutter and the A640. From here follow the path (black dotted line on the map not the green right of way which isn’t on the ground) to reach the road. Whereas the "by OS Area: HP to TV" links on the left sidebar here, allow you to bag all trigpoints in each of the Ordnance Survey Grid Reference areas.

Pass Black Rock Orchard community space on your left and then cross over the 17 th century pack horse bridge which crosses Bradshaw Brook. Note the ornate structure of the bridge which was dictated by the then owner of Turton Tower in 1848, James Kay, who insisted that it be in keeping with the rest of the estate. I've now added a list of all the trig points I've visited over the years, along with an interactive map of their locations.

The heights given relate to Ordnance Datum Newlyn (ODN), the waypoint identities are John's own with a 6 prefix (not compatible with the primary file). Aside from her own adventures, Fiona's biggest aim is to inspire others to enjoy getting outside and exploring, especially through her writing. We asked to see the pictures of the trig points you’ve found on your successful climbs around the UK. Trig in vgc plastic plug set on little mound plug missing wet underfoot on way up followed PROW marked on 1:50. Yarlside is a mountain summit in the Penrith to Lancaster region in the county of Lancashire, England.

Doubling back off the track to the north further on I climbed a locked gate onto land with a covered reservoir atop a field of long wet grass. Cotton mills, printworks, bleachworks, an iron foundry, and a paper mill were important industries in this part of Turton after the Industrial Revolution. When I started bagging trig points I decided to group them by walking area (such as National Parks), as much to encourage me to find new routes as anything else. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the timbered farmhouse buildings on the east and north of the Tower and the Entrance Hall were added. Here cross back over the A635 and head left along the road to continue to the small car park to follow the path (thankfully paved). Built at the time of the construction of Anglezarke Reservoir, Heapey Waterman’s Cottage has an enviable position right on the edge of the water when the water level is high.
