About this deal

Stearn is my botanical hero; so I am glad to see that Parker lists his Botanical Latin (first published in 1966) in his bibliography. For instance, in Atlas, one of my favourite chapters, Parker divides his plant lists between general, habitat and named geographical regions. So where a plant has the word orientalis as part of its Latin name you’ll recognise it’s something to do with the orient or east.

Biography: The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is the UK's largest gardening charity, dedicated to advancing horticulture and promoting good gardening. By the way, I’ve noticed a strange phenomena – Wikipedia in German often has much more detail on plants and botany than the equivalent English pages. In the first, History, he points out that botanical Latin can be entertaining rather than off-putting, and recites historical stories of how plants got their names. For instance digitalis “grandiflora” has smaller flowers than the common foxglove (but bigger than the other yellow foxgloves). As the government’s national archive for England, Wales and the United Kingdom, The National Archives hold over 1,000 years of the nation’s records for everyone to discover and use. Actually, most of Latin for Gardeners is a dictionary of epithets – the second or specific names of plants, not the first or genus name. I once had durian ice cream at a Thai restaurant, and it made me think of a cross between a peach and a really dirty sock.

RHS Latin for Gardeners: Over 3,000 Plant Names Explained and Explored - Lorraine HarrisonLondon: Mitchell Beazley, 2012, Hardback. In addition, there are plant profiles and short biographies of plant explorers who have been memorialized in many genus and species names. A bonus is the pages in between the list… a few plants are profiled, with notes on how they got their name or certain associations and uses. Often times this is the case where the epithet is in the form of a dedication as in "leachiana," named for the botanist Lilla Leach. I learned the proper naming convention for plant labels, Genus (uppercase) and species (lowercase) in italics, followed by common name all in lowercase, e.Beside history, genera and species, I want a list of vernacular names – those of the wild flowers with which we have been familiar all our lives. These shows exhibit the best in horticulture by providing show gardens, floral marques and expert advice.
