About this deal

Millwood Hargrave has created a young female lead that readers will instantly connect with, no matter their age.

This description contrasts the cerebral with the instinctive through Miso’s perspective on the very next page: ‘She’s reached the land of bears. They have been a couple and collaborators ever since, but Julia and the Shark was their first novel. Short stories encompass engagements broken and mended, honeymoon adventures and glamorous and eccentric weddings. She has received many accolades and awards since she was first published in 2012 with Last March, a poetry collection. Having previously read Julia and the Shark by Kiran and Tom I just knew this would also be a great read.Leila travelling to Norway to reunite with her mother while Miso, a blue fox, journeys across a continent. But as the summer reaches its height, her mother's obsession with the shark threatens to engulf them all.

The story has the message of environmental damage and climate change, but it also has a very strong parallel with Leila’s own history.Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. It’s a great way of introducing those topics to younger readers, with further reading included at the back (as well as for the arctic animals.

Very happy about my signed copy from my local Waterstones with the little paw prints along the edges. Their last conversation is very touching and shows the strain the modern world puts on traditional family relationships. Leila is a Syrian refugee and after six years of living apart from her Professor mother, she is leaving her new home in London to be reunited with her mother in Norway.Based on the true story of an Arctic fox who walked from Norway to Canada in seventy-six days, a distance of two thousand miles, this compelling, emotional and beautifully illustrated story is perfect for readers of any age. This pocket-sized book presents the most essential poems in his dispensary: those which, again and again, have really shown themselves to work. It was an incredibly sophisticated and mature children’s book that could be enjoyed by every reader.
