About this deal

This is a story of mother and daughter relationships, a bitter sweet tale that tells of heartbreaks, joy and forgiveness. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, but I didn't find myself gripped like I did with her others.

This is a wonderful story about the relationships between different generations of women within the same family. Told from different points of view, this book is measured as it builds on all the past and present frustrations that all the characters have. Grace doesn’t like a lot of fuss, so a surprise party to celebrate her reaching ninety is not going to be well received. Each character was realistic and I have fallen in love with Grace , she is such a strong woman and as a Welsh woman myself , I see a lot of my own grandmothers in her. The 2019 Christmas Day special of Gavin and Stacey gained national critical acclaim, drawing an audience of over 18 million, winning a BAFTA for TV moment of the year and a National Television Award for Impact. She just wants a quiet celebration: her daily swim in the sea and a cup of tea with granddaughter Elin and great-granddaughter Beca. Noticed another reviewer mentioned she disliked the way RJ often leaves the endings off words, ie, "nothin" instead of "nothing and "somethin", not "something". Any mother or daughter will identify with many of the situations in this book and be encouraged by the final denouement.

I often find it hard to keep up with multigenerational novels and each chapter written from someone else’s perspective but the transitions in this were pretty seamless and the humour was just right. Ruth Jones is best known for her outstanding and award-winning television writing, most notably BBC One's Gavin and Stacey , which she co-wrote with James Corden and in which she played the incorrigible Nessa Jenkins. I was completely captivated by this character-driven story of mother/daughter relationships and really cared about the characters; I was genuinely sad to finish it and leave them all behind.Grace, in her 90th year, certainly doesn’t act her age and her home by the sea in Dylan’s Quay has been a refuge for her grand-daughter Elin and Elin’s daughter Beca throughout their lives. Elin is busy organising a surprise birthday party for Grace and as usual it has got completely out-of-hand, exasperating both her husband Greg and Beca. What Grace really wants is to find her daughter Alys; mother of Elin and absent from the family for thirty years. A wonderfully told story following 4 generations of Welsh women, with complex characters, complicated relationships and a glorious and beautiful ending.

It got into the depths of mother / daughter / grandmother / great grandmother relationships in such a wonderful and both heartbreaking and endearing way. It is a joy-filled, life-affirming, sob-inducing novel – with characters you’ll come to know and love – from no.

That's Grace, nearly ninety; her wayward daughter Alys; Alys's daughter Elin, a headteacher; and Beca, the younger generation, just 16. The reader gains knowledge of this family's background, including the harm and suffering that have been inflicted upon them. Her debut novel Never Greener was chosen as WHSmith Fiction Book of the Year 2018, was nominated for Debut of the Year at the British Book Awards, was a Zoe Ball Book Club pick, and was a Sunday Times bestseller for fifteen weeks, three weeks at number one. Also found the colloquial grammer used whenever characters spoke irritating, ie the way all the gs were dropped - "nothin" "pickin" etc. Elin, Becca’s mother is a headteacher, organised and knows what is best for everyone; her husband, her daughter and even her grandmother.

Grace knows that by tracing and meeting Alys after so many years she risks her granddaughter’s fury. A respected head teacher at the local school, Elin couldn't bear anyone to find out the truth about her mother. What a wonderful, heart-warming, beautifully emotional story by Ruth Jones of 4 generations, trying to navigate their own lives and their relationships with others and each other. The novel is set in Jones’s beloved Wales, and scattered with Welsh terms of endearment, which adds to the sensation of reading it wrapped in a comfort blanket.

Told from each woman's point of view this novel criss-crosses backwards and forwards in time, stopping on key events in their lives. THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER***'Love, mess, secrets; this story of four generations of women is filled with Ruth Jones's warmth and wisdom. Sounded too familiar - as I was the great-granddaughter in my family until I lost my great-nan when I was 24, I just had to read this to see how the dynamics worked between the 4!
