In some ways it is nice to read a male perspective when it comes to love although I don’t think many men would admit to ever behaving like a love sick teen like Will does through out. He is also very self centred and everything has to revolve around him and what he is going through rather than his friends. He’s about to turn 26, totally skint, living in a run-down flat, and still pining after his ex-girlfriend, Aggi. It’s very much about unacquainted love and putting that someone on a pedestal, so much so that it holds the other person back from getting on with their life. I have no idea of what record broke the loadedly silent tension, but in all honesty it would be difficult for pretty much anyone to notice the next song played after the first time they heard Babies. COMMITMENT, so when I stumbled across MY LEGENDARY GIRLFRIEND - which happens to be his first book, I had to read it! Mike Gayle, previously a contributor to FHM and Just Seventeen magazines has dipped his pen in the inkpot of universal experience and written a comic novel underpinned by rejection and the ripples (or tidal waves) it continues to produce for years afterwards.

I mean I know people can hold a torch for people they loved but it was a bit overkill for me that he hadn’t yet moved on. Which would make it deserve at least 3 stars, but I gave it a 4 because I liked how I didn't expect the ending. Will’s flat is a squalid pit, and he does little to tidy it up, and over the course of the book it gets messier and grubbier. For exactly three years afterwards in the case of Will Kelly, assigned to the "history" drawer on his 23rd birthday by Aggi, (she of the titular moniker) and who is now undergoing his 26th "celebration" alone in his bedsit in Archway, North London.Like an outrageous celebrity interview on The Word or a savagely pointed comment on Have I Got News For You, it seemed to step dangerously outside the unspoken consensus that there were certain limits that were not to be – as laughable as it might seem now – tested lightly. It wasn’t like funk was unheard of in Sheffield – this is the town and the recording studio that gave us Chakk after all – but earlier examples had generally been of the angular, moody sort – the kind you couldn’t dance to without doing a line of whizz and glaring around the dancefloor.
