A Blu-ray of Independence Day finds the Philips on much more comfortable ground. Sharpness, clarity and detail are excellent, with healthy-looking complexions and a nice natural colour balance to the film. Most rival TVs, including those from Samsung, Sony and LG, only offer either HDR10+ or Dolby Vision – not both. Even though there’s content out there that’s only available in one format or the other. Hopefully, one day all TVs will join Philips in taking such an agnostic approach to HDR formats. Outside of that, it retains the same core features we love about the C3 range as a whole. Specifically, it features the same Alpha 9 Gen 6 processor as the 65-inch C3 and G3, and identical connectivity, with it sporting four PS5 and Xbox Series X/S-ready HDMI 2.1 ports that support 4K/120Hz, VRR and ALLM. It can also handle Dolby Vision gaming (right up to 120Hz, in fact) and an HGiG mode for more accurate HDR gaming.

Smart functionality comes from Android 10. The platform is polished and stable, with excellent streaming options. Freeview Play ensures all your catch-up TV addiction will be well served too. There’s a satellite tuner option if you’re dish-centric. Philips OLED+936 TV review: Verdict The OLED+936 looks distinctly upmarket. The panel is held in a premium steel frame, and is predictably wafer thin. It bulges out for electronics, connectivity and Ambilight LEDs, but not by much. The Bowers & Wilkins sound system is integrated into the short pedestal stand, connected to the panel via a captive cable. The remote control is a premium handful, with dedicated buttons for Netflix, Prime Video and Rakuten TV. The only slight downside is that it doesn’t quite match the maximum brightness levels of the G2 when we ran the two head-to-head in our test rooms. This is because the G2 features an additional heatsink that allows its panel to be pushed harder and therefore brighter. In the mean time, at least Philips has combined Android TV with Freeview Play. Together with a fairly impressive selection of streaming apps (there’s no Apple TV, but at least you do get Disney+), you should never be short of something to watch. Twin TV tuners help on that score, too.

The Philips 48OLED806 is such a great size. If you’re thinking of replacing a smaller, older TV, then don’t discount this 48-incher. The OLED806 will let tones pop if required, but it does subtle and understated far better than we’re used to. Perhaps most strikingly, the OLED806 can do both in the same scene, combining natural and vivid very effectively. This TV can identify and deliver even the most minor variations in tone or shading, and it can do so without getting unnatural about it.

As usual with Philips TVs, the other areas in which it excels are sharpness and clarity. Its Ultra Resolution sharpness booster is uncannily effective, making 4K look more like 6K, even on the relatively small 55-inch screen we’re looking at here. What’s more, clarity holds up superbly when there’s motion in the picture, thanks to Philips’ impressive Pure Cinema motion mode, which calms hardware judder without turning 24fps film sources into over-smooth soap operas.
