It’s good to see that there’s an option to show a red outline around the on-screen image when the camera is recording. There are times when this is more useful than the usual flashing red dot. While those who splashed out the A7S III might feel slightly aggrieved that the FX3 has arrived just six months on, they will largely be hybrid shooters with slightly different needs.That’s a nice improvement on the A7 III which doesn’t have 10-bit colour nor 4K 60p capability and applies a 1.2x crop to 4K 30p footage. The Clear Image Zoom function effectively digitally doubles the zoom range of the attached lens, using Sony's Pixel Super Resolution Technology to increase the magnification. The Auto Object Framing mode uses face detection and the rule of thirds to automatically crop and create more tightly framed shots. The same Pixel Super Resolution Technology ensures that the resulting image is still a full 12 megapixels in size, and the original uncropped image is also saved for easy comparison. With 61 million effective pixels on their full-frame sensors, the Sony A7R IV and Sony A7R V are the highest resolution cameras in the A7 range. Their high pixel counts enable the two camera to capture a huge amount of detail and, thanks to Sony’s fantastic sensor-building knowhow and the BSI design, noise is controlled well. That said, we’d recommend making ISO 12,800 the top value you use if possible. But Sony says that its electronic Clear Image Zoom function –which lets you get 2x zoom with any lens by intelligently creating pixels, rather than simply cropping – is very popular with pro filmmakers, and this function will also work with the FX3's zoom lever. 4. The FX3 has cooling fans for longer record times As you can see above, the differences between the cameras are huge and if you're not yet a working pro video shooter, it may well be worth considering more recent hybrid video cameras with smaller sensors, like the Panasonic GH5 (rumored to be succeeded soon by the Panasonic GH6) and Fujifilm X-T4.
The Sony A7 III and A7R IV have been around so long now that it’s easy to forget the handling updates that the Mark III cameras made over the Mark II versions. The A7S II still has the awkwardly placed via record button but thankfully that’s been resolved in the Mark III upgrade. Disappointingly, though, there’s still no in-camera raw conversion. Maybe Sony will finally get around to adding this to one of it’s cameras, but we won’t hold our breath. Sony Alpha 7S III – Build and Handling According to Sony, using a BSI design also doubles the readout speed which brings a range of performance enhancements. The camera also feels a little more responsive that previous Sonys we've used, making the connection between your button presses and the camera's response feel more direct. SteadyShot ActiveAdding to the A7S's snapshot simplicity, these features accompany face recognition and smile shutter functionality on board, the former mode biasing human faces in the frame and the latter mode firing the shutter when it detects a smiling subject. The Face Detection system automatically adjusts the focus, exposure and white balance for people in the frame, and can even be set to distinguish between children and adults. Smile Detection offers three self-explanatory options, Big, Normal and Slight. Used in conjunction, the Face and Smile Detection systems do result in more hits than misses, especially in contrasty lighting conditions, although all those smiling faces could ultimately freak you out a little! The self-portrait options in the self-timer menu work by automatically taking the shot with a two second delay after either one or two people have entered the frame. It's a high-end video camera, whose capabilities become apparent if you're shooting in a demanding manner. If you're not a video specialist then yes, a general stills/video camera like the Z6 will be a better choice, but that's not what this camera is trying to do. Here are two 100% crops which have been Saved as Web - Quality 50 in Photoshop. The right-hand image has had some sharpening applied in Photoshop. The out-of-the camera images are a little soft at the default sharpening setting. You can change the in-camera sharpening level if you don't like the default look. The A7 III’s full-frame sensor also has a pixel count of 24.2 million, which as well as being a popular figure, allows a good balance between detail resolution, file size and noise control. Add in 4K (3840 x 2160) video recording with S-Log plus abattery that has a much longer life than the A7 II’s and the Mark III looks like aneasy decision.
