When my colleagues and I analyzed the ball in a wind tunnel, we found that the Jabulani was too smooth overall and so had a higher drag coefficient than the 2006 Teamgeist ball. With shots from close range, it’s vital the goalkeeper gets both hands behind the ball with support from the thumbs to help ease it softly into your grip. When we started using Al Rihla in April, it took a few training sessions for our goalkeepers to get used to its speed and power, leading to spills and errors from shots they normally handled with ease.

FL: The focus is that we really want to equip the players with the best gear. The game is getting so much faster, so we want to equip them with the best ball; one that has a really good flight and reliability. I think it is radically different, yes, but for good reason, that being that we really want it to be a part of the fast-paced action.I think the whole way, from starting with the bladder to what we have now is just an amazing journey, and it really looks like that too.
