About this deal

United Kingdom – White Teeth by Zadie Smith:A suicidal World War II veteran gets a second lease on life when he marries a beautiful but toothless Jamaican woman half his age while his friend and fellow vet, a Muslim Bengali, enters into an arranged marriage with a feisty woman. Insurrecto explores the eternal question: Who gets to write history? We meet Chiara, an American filmmaker touring the Philippines to write a screenplay about the 1901 Balangiga massacre, during which occupying American soldiers killed as many as 50,000 Filipinos. Is the subject matter horrifying? Yes. Is the novel witty, punny, and consistently funny? Surprisingly, yes. Morocco – Secret Son by Laila Lalami:A boy raised by a single mother in the slums of Casablanca finds out that his father is not only alive, but a wealthy businessman.

These graphic novels of historical fiction have become a real habit for author/illustrator Matt Phelan; and who, after all, does them any better than he? With a touch of whimsy to his characters' smiles and the bold wishes of a few determined people to go against all odds and change the world, a story is born; not from the author's imagination, but from the actual journeys of three real people who chose, each in his or her own way, to circumnavigate the globe in the tradition of Ferdinand Magellan and Phileas Fogg (fictional though the latter may be). Battling their critics, situational obstacles and the limits of human physiological stamina and contemporary technology, Thomas Stevens, Nellie Bly and Joshua Slocum each set out to accomplish a feat that had never been successfully completed...even, for some of them, if it meant devoting years of their life to the task. The stories get more depressing from there. Nellie Bly seems to have had a terrible time, and was mostly carried in her journey by others. Joshua Slocum seems to have embarked on his trip out of severe depression over losing a wife. Ukraine – Wave of Terror by Theodore Odrach:A firsthand fictionalized account ofthe Stalinistoccupation of Belarus.

Taiwan – Notes of a Desolate Man by T’ien-wen Chu:A gay man ruminates about his life, morality, and Taiwanese society as he watches his childhood friend succumb to AIDS. Poland – House of Day, House of Night by Olga Tokarczuk:Fictional stories of the lives of residents of Silesia, a region that overlaps parts of Poland, Germany, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Still from the 1956 film adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days, starring (from left) Robert Newton as Inspector Fix, David Niven as Phileas Fogg, and Shirley MacLaine as Aouda. Germany – The Quest for Christa T.by Christa Wolf:One of David Bowie’s top 100 books, The Quest for Christa T.follows two childhood friends from World War II to the Eastern Bloc in the 1960s.

Japan – Woman on the Other Shore by Mitsuyo Kakuta:A friendship develops between astay-at-home mother and a single, free-spirited career woman.

Colombia – One Hundred Years of Solitudeby Gabriel García Márquez:The multi-generational story of the Buendía family that founded the fictional town of Macondo. Mark Beaumont's Around the World in 80 Days | Artemis World Cycle". artemisworldcycle.com. Archived from the original on 21 April 2018 . Retrieved 9 August 2019. It’s a story as old as time: A child embarks on a quest to understand her family. In this case the child is a young woman, Mira, raised in Chicago by her mother to believe her father wanted nothing to do with her. When her mother falls ill, Mira discovers letters from her Panamanian father and abandons her comfortable life to search for him. As much as it’s about family, it’s also a sublime novel about the geography, culture, and people of Panama. So yeah, these are not happy, triumphant stories. Things are not spelled out for us - we have to interpret the pictures to understand major plot points. Flightfox created a trip, "Around the World in 80 Hours", to see if flight experts could find cheap flights following the same path as described in the book. [36] The online travel company then wrote a fictional eBook based on the results of the contest. [37]
