All of our waterproof products, following their manufacture, are treated with a waterproof coating on the outside of the garment. This feature is in addition to the Gore-Tex or AQ waterproof membrane inside the garment. Some people claim that the Paclite material is less resistant to abrasion (it doesn’t have the internal netting layer of Gore-Tex Professional). We have not seen any evidence of this at all and would not let this put you off buying any Paclite garment. This is especially the case for overtrousers because by their very nature they will not be used on every walk, and even when they are used, it is not likely to be for the whole time – they are there for protection against the elements when required. For a more hands-on approach to outdoor life (e.g. fishing, hunting or general camping activities) then you may require something a bit more rugged. We can highly recommend the Solognac R900 reinforced waterproof trousers for these kind of activities. They are superb. Waterproof trousers are useless if they don’t do job number 1 on the requirement list – to keep all of the unwanted water away from the under trousers, undergarments and legs. Poor quality trousers don’t function as well as you may want so it’s best to avoid the lesser-known brands when buying waterproofs that you need to rely on. Breathability Price – as you’d expect the price of a product can be an instantly recognisable factor on what sort of quality you can expect. In terms of design, the knee area shows a decent level of articulation, with a taped seam separating the lower half of the leg from the upper. This helps the Downpours follow the natural contour of your legs as you walk and it works well. The waist band is fully elasticated but also includes a toggle cord to draw them extra tightly if you so desire. Another nice design touch is a small hook included at the lower end of each leg which can attach to the laces of your walking boots in a similar way to gaiters. This can prevent water and mud splashing up inside the overtrousers and onto your main walking trousers. Bear in mind that the fit of the Ventus is quite slim in terms of waist size although there is elastic which allows some expansion and adjustability. Legs zips allow the bottom portion of the waterproof trouser to be opened up to allow them to be put on without the need to remove boots. The longer the zips, the better, however, these openings do provide space for rain to leak through. Water-resistant zips can prevent this to a degree, as can external flaps. Ventilation

Here are some of the features you need to consider when buying new waterproof Gore-tex trousers: Fit RET is the resistance to evaporative heat loss meaning the lower the number the more breathable a fabric is. During the test a fabric is placed on a ‘sweating guarded hot plate’ (a porous hot plate with water channelled through it) and the required energy to keep this plate at a constant temperature is measured in m²Pa/W (area[m²] Pressure[Pa] / energy[W]) That got us thinking though, that we’re looking at every possible item from Berghaus so it would be good to narrow our search down even further and only look at Berghaus branded products within the Waterproof Trousers category. The cost of Berghaus Waterproof Trousers Unfortunately none of these tests correlate with each other and in fact different fabrics types appear to perform better on different tests so they are not interchangeable.As the fabric in question is Gore-Tex Pro we can only provide data using RET as this is the standard test Gore-Tex use for their fabrics (Gore may be able to supply more data). However to speak in general terms you would normally expect most fabrics with a RET of 6 m²Pa/W to have an Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate of well over 20,000 g/m²/24hours when tested using the most commonly known MVTR test method (Inverted cup B1 method).AT Fibre Fill - High loft insulation filling that offers an excellent warmth to weight ratio and a low water absorption level. Breathability is excellent at 10000 g/m2/24hrs (40000 for the Airedales) and this is so important when you could be wearing the trousers all day. There is no doubt that you will get warm wearing these, so we recommend that you use them in autumn and winter rather than spring/summer. In Use

These Craghoppers Kiwi Pro Waterproof Trousers are great all-round walking trousers – the fact that they also offer excellent waterproof performance via an AquaDry membrane for a great price make them a no-brainer if you’re after some all round trousers. For women, we also recommend the Airedale trousers which have even better waterproof performance. The R900s are perfectly adept for walking, but they are certainly heavier than standard walking trousers at around 1kg. But you are getting doubly reinforced front thigh, knee and calf areas which means you can kneel down without fear of tearing your trousers. We managed to find 2 items that were made by Berghaus and are categorised as “Waterproof Trousers”.Another factor that can be a great indication of product quality is the brand. Brands like Berghaus are of course extremely well known, especially for Waterproof Trousers. Advanced Thermals: Fleece fabrics developed exclusively for Berghaus ensuring excellent thermal insulation properties, pilling resistance and great styling. There are many different tests for breathability of a fabric. Several test methods will give results in g/m²/24hours (I’m not sure which method the customer is referring to) whereas RET, which is the standard test used by Gore-Tex, gives results in m²Pa/W. Stormflaps around the ends of the overtrousers are a welcome touch and help seal you up completely against the elements. We must also mention the overall style of the Spraysways – they look great and seem to have a better shape/fit than more expensive competition. Great work Sprayway!
