About this deal

The Positive Birth Book takes expectant parents through the maze of information and choices, in a down to earth, practical, empowering, reassuring way. I highly recommend that you put your feet up, relax and enjoy preparing yourself for the birth of your baby by reading this great book.”

To feel more empowered during pregnancy, and to ensure that you’re really taking your pregnancy into your own hands, read this book by Rebecca Fett. You and your partner will have a better understanding of your baby’s brain development during pregnancy, alongside many other issues from the use of vitamins right through to your baby’s first year. As both a survivor of birth trauma, and now a perinatal mental health practitioner working with antenatal and postnatal parents, I found in this book a perfect balance of information, up-to date evidence-based research, survivor stories and practical tips. The authors use accessible and sensitive language throughout, and it was refreshing to read a chapter about the impact of a birth trauma on health professionals, as this is often not included in literature. Relating to all of this has helped me to feel less guilty about everything that happened. I really felt like I could relate and had a friend who was supportive and understood my feelings and struggles.New Active Birth contains a forward by the late Sheila Kitzinger, and an introduction by world famous obstetrician, Doctor Michel Odent. Three birth all-stars in one book! I found the book a perfect mix of humour and emotion. It isn’t so emotional that it’s hard for people with birth trauma to read, and it isn’t so comical so that it glosses over all the hardships the author went through. Thank you Kim for the opportunity to read your book, it has made me realise that I am not alone and it is ‘normal’ for my birth to have impacted me after what I had gone through. I will be recommending this to friends and work colleagues whose birth has impacted them. Your No Guilt Pregnancy Plan, by Rebecca Schiller: The best pregnancy book for reassuring, unbiased advice

In case anyone is uncertain about what you’re “allowed” to do when giving birth, Hill spells it out: stop asking for permission, recognize that your experience matters–quite a bit–and demand respect. Researchers, activists, and journalists have been raising alarms about inappropriate and even abusive maternity treatment for decades, yet it persists. Hill joins the chorus with a loud call to action for feminists: this is your issue, too.”

I believe this book should be essential reading for maternity workers, perinatal practitioners, and anyone else involved in caring for new parents. I was initially excited about reading this book, when asked to review it. However, it took a while to work through because I personally found it somewhat triggering. The book definitely has some very valid points and excellent tips for recovery. However it is not a one size fits all and depending on where your trauma stems from this book may not be right for you. The Positive Birth Book is a must-read for every mum-to-be. By showing that birth can be an amazing, empowering and life-enhancing experience, Milli Hill is giving birth to a whole new way to think about bringing life into the world.”
