Leather is a naturally durable fabric that can last for hundreds of years. It even ages well, becoming a soft, flexible material with proper care. With that said, the dyes used to treat leather are likely to fade over time. As such, leather dye is a great way to rejuvenate your leather and breath new life into it. With the rise of DIY, leather dying has also become a popular technique. DIYers can use leather dye to create new or upcycled leather products. Using a sponge, apply one coat of the leather primer thinly to the surface, wiping in the same direction. Use a hair dryer until it is completely dry and then repeat the same process, but wipe in a different direction to the first coat. Then allow to dry completely, using your hair dryer to speed things up, and then repeat. Begin by using acetone to disinfect a couch and then add a few coats of leather dye to the whole piece of furniture. Your sofa would look completely fresh within a couple of hours. White vinegar or alcohol rubbing can get rid of most stains.

Avoid cheap leather dye. When you want to revitalise your sofa, invest in a good-quality dye, such as ours. Cheap dye doesn't have the same appeal and will probably rub off on your clothes. Also read: How to Restore Your Old Leather Item with a Repair Kit? How should you darken leather naturally?

The second stage of the leather dye adds the two-tone distressed or aged look that gives the leather couch character and appeal. For around 1-2 weeks, leave the mixture to rest. The more it sits, the darker it will eventually be;

Three coats are usually needed, and you should change the direction of the strokes by 45º with each coat as this helps to scatter the light reflection easily. You can use a hair dryer to speed up drying time between coats. Yes, you may use the brewed coffee to let leather a shade darker than it is. You can take cheap or expensive coffee beans to brew this dye. Here is what you should do: If The Leather Colour Doctor isn't your first stop today, you probably already know that darkening leather isn't as easy as it first seemed, right? Oil vs dye vs polish (vs coffee vs walnut hulls - WHAT? More on that later...) - it's all very complex.Before you begin, it's a good idea to move the couch to a well-ventilated area and to wear gloves throughout the process. Mix the finishes together to create the version that you’re after, using the guide above as a reference. Once mixed, test the finish on an inconspicuous are to make sure you’re happy with it. You can adjust it by adding more matt or gloss, as needed. If you’re unsure what finish you want, start with Satin and adjust as required from there

Next up is the leather primer. This is essentially an adhesion promoter designed to allow you to build more layers on top of it to create the best colour match for the look you're trying to achieve. Perhaps you want a light colour, a new colour altogether, or you want to match the old look of your furniture before it grew faded. Mix the regular rubbing alcohol and powdered mica pigment. The more pigments you add, the more intense color you get; To apply it, simply use a sponge or spray to apply thin coats, drying in between each one. The hair dryer is key here, because otherwise you would have to wait a few hours between each coat before you could spray or gently wipe another layer of sealant on to the leather, and it would just take too long. People who buy leather furniture know just how luxurious it feels. It's comfortable and opulent and it looks great.

The previous step will have removed the manufacturers finish and any silicones that are soluble in solvents. There are however some silicones like spray on polish and waxes that aren't soluble in solvents, and so to remove these we need to use the Alcohol Cleaner. After using the Leather Prep wipe the leather down with a cloth dampened in the Alcohol Cleaner. For ease of use you could also spray the Alcohol Cleaner directly onto the leather. Now wait at least 30 minutes for the cleaners to evaporate; ideally overnight.
