An onscreen caption promises “The Early Songs Of Bob Dylan”, a category that turns out to include “ What Was It You Wanted” from 1989’s Oh Mercy – which, when you stop to remember Dylan’s performing career now spans 60 years, seems fair enough. Mostly, though, the songs are drawn from the mid-1960s and early-1970s, with Dylan digging out some tunes he’s left alone for a while, including a couple he hasn’t played live in decades: that hypnotic “ What Was It You Wanted”, rendered in a way simultaneously swampy and delicate; and 1966’s “ Pledging My Time”, with Dylan casting softly after the shadow of Little Walter on harmonica. Kitty Empire gave it a 5-out-of-5 star review in The Guardian, calling it "completely thrilling" and identifying the high point as Dylan's "poignant drawl on a sensational ' What Was It You Wanted', a series of accusatory questions that stress how slippery knowledge is". Empire also compared the Bon Bon club's atmosphere to "the vibe of the sleeve art of last year’s Rough and Rowdy Ways". [17] See also [ edit ] Wise, Brian (May 22, 2023). Certainly, at the age of 80, with this performance, Dylan demonstrated that he’s still way out there, still on the beaten path. It’s not dark yet – there are no shadows without light, after all. A film for the plague times, it felt like the end of the world, and the end of the world felt great. Smoke ’em if you’ve got ’em. Catlin, Roger (July 21, 2021). Writing in Uncut, Richard Williams rated the album four out of five stars, arguing that its sound seemingly grew out of Dylan's previous album Rough and Rowdy Ways. Williams called the music a "loose, fluid instrumental mesh" and described how "slow swells of accordion, acoustic guitars and bowed string bass" underline "the carefully articulated front-and-centre vocal". [9]The thing is, of course, that Bob Dylan songs aren’t quite so transient. At the end of The Philosophy Of Modern Song, Dylan writes, “Music transcends time by living within it, just as reincarnation allows us to transcend life by living it again and again.” This, perhaps, is the key to Shadow Kingdom, and a decent artistic reason – the commercial expediencies being self-evident – why Dylan has chosen to release the show as an album now. The old songs and vintage effect might invoke a certain nostalgia, but the juke joint ambience is more Lynchian than neat historic reconstruction, and the songs sound little like they used to do. It’s a dream Dylan destination, but it’s one which is, as per his Philosophy, “of a time but also timeless”. Now, shortly after Dylan’s 82 nd birthday, which was on 24 May this year, we’ve been treated to an official release of the songs on Shadow Kingdom. Who knows what he’ll be getting up to next. Dylan’s career has lasted more than 60 years and, now in his early eighties, he still surprises, confuses and delights us. Long may it continue. Bob Dylan's live-streamed concert was evocative, touching and a devotee's dream – review". The Independent. July 19, 2021 . Retrieved July 22, 2021. A review by Scott Bauer of the Associated Press praised the arrangements, noting how the "heavy dose of accordion and no drums" make the songs "sound fresh again". Bauer also claimed that the album "stands as a good retort for all the naysayers who have argued, seemingly from day one, that Dylan can't sing. The subdued arrangements are perfect for Dylan’s well-weathered, unfairly maligned voice". [24]
