The last known speaker of traditional Cornish was John Mann, who died in 1914. Another new feature of the dictionary is the use of illustrations. At the moment, this is limited to plant species. This was made possible by Bangor University’s existing work linking the Welsh dictionary to free resources on Wikipedia. The Akademi intends to develop this feature and explore with Bangor University other ways to make our language more accessible using digital apps.

After much discussion, a Standard Written Form (SWF) of Cornish, or Furv Skrifys Savonek, was agreed on in 2008 by the main Cornish language groups: Kesva an Taves Kernewek, Kowerthas an Yeth Kernewek, Agan Tavas and Cussel an Tavas Kernôwek. The SWF is intended for official use and for formal education. It was adopted by the Gorsedh Kernow in 2009, and a few minor changes were made in 2013. In other contexts people are free to choose the form of written Cornish they prefer. Bruyans, Brewions – crumbs, fragments (in use after the year 1800, from Cornish language brywyon) [4] Wheal – often incorrectly attributed to meaning a mine, but actually means a place of work; the names of most Cornish mines are prefixed with Wheal, such as Wheal Jane and Wheal Butson.
