About this deal

We’ve never seen a robot vacuum look and feel as sleek as the X1 Turbo. The robot itself has a familiar circular design, but what grabbed our attention at first glance was the brushed metal finish, which looks lovely despite being made of plastic.

Flour is a more challenging test for robot vacuum cleaners and the Deebot fell behind a little in this test. On hard floor it wasn’t too bad, with the robot collecting 78% of our spill. It left a lot behind on the short-pile carpet, however, collecting a mere 42%.The mopping pads are attached to the bot with Velcro, so they can be removed and thrown in the washing machine if they get especially dirty. Ecovacs has implemented a design change here as well, with the mopping pads automatically lifting up when a carpet is detected. While this works well, I found it didn’t lift high enough to prevent my medium-pile carpet from getting damp, particularly around the edges where fibre meets hard floor. Full process to create a complete Debian installation of sid ( unstable): main # export MY_CHROOT=/sid-root

So far, I’ve only asked the X2 Omni to map my apartment once, and it was fairly accurate. It initially mapped my kitchen and a hallway that leads into it as one single room, but this was easily fixed afterwards by separating the areas in the app. I’d like to give the robot a few more chances before definitively commenting on its mapping capabilities, but my first impressions are that it gets the job done reasonably well. One early critique that I have for the X2 Omni is its object avoidance capabilities. As mentioned, I’ve been using one of Ecovacs’ premium models from 2022 for over a year, and I feel as though the X2 Omni bumps into objects and obstacles more frequently than the older model. I believe this may have something to do with the LiDAR sensor being moved from the top of the robot and being built into the side of the bot instead. It could also be a result of the new softly squared shape, but it’s too early to tell at this stage. Suction power can also be controlled through the app – we’d say standard vacuum power is more than enough for hard surfaces, and fares surprisingly well on carpets too. You also have the option of boosting the bot’s suction power with Max or Max+ modes, and these are what you want to go for if you need a more thorough job. Similarly, you can control how much water the droid is using while mopping your floor – we’d suggest using the highest water setting to cope with more porous surfaces, and for your best chance at a passable job. This is just brilliant. Most mopping robots I’ve seen require you to manually add no-mop zones. You can still do that here but you can also safely leave the robot to do its own thing and it won’t soak rugs or doormats. Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni review: How well does it clean? The voice assistant is particularly handy as it works straight out of the box – there’s no need to link your robot to your home smart assistant (although the T10+ is also Google Assistant and Alexa-compatible) – and Yiko can understand a greater number of commands.

Vacuuming and mopping for less than you’d expect

You control the robot vacuum using an intuitive companion app that’s easy to navigate. On Deebot’s first run around your apartment, it creates a highly accurate map, so you can clean custom areas based on needs. It’s also from here that you can adjust settings and create schedules. You’ll even receive notifications on your phone if there are issues during cleaning and also once cleaning is complete. Under the top plate, which is magnetically attached to the robot, there’s a 400ml collection bin, although this isn’t likely to ever fill up before the base station has emptied it with its own 21kPa vacuum. Initial setup is straightforward: you have to use the accompanying mobile app to connect your robot to your Wi-Fi network (it only works over 2.4GHz), but that’s about as complicated as it gets. You also need to fill the four-litre clean water tank with tap water, by simply lifting it out of the top of the base station and filling it up at the sink.

Of course, Ecovacs’ Deebot T9+ is more than just a vacuum. It offers air freshener and mopping abilities too. Swapping between the two functions is as simple as putting in a different component. It registers immediately, and you can send the device on its way. Flip the robot vac over and you’ll get a better idea of how this device works. There are two side brushes towards the front to sweep debris towards the main brush located in the middle. That main brush can get quite tangled with hair and fibers, but thankfully the brush is easy to remove and simple to clean. Under the top panel, the U2 has a 400ml dustbin which is surrounded by a slim 300ml water reservoir. Both are easy to remove and use, although the small size of the bin meant we needed to empty it after each run. It’s quite impressive to watch, as the robot will make its way around and automatically determine different areas of your home, which you’ll then be able to view on a map. You can edit the map by labeling areas, dividing sections or merging them together, and creating virtual boundaries. Why is this important? For future cleans, you can tell the X1 Turbo to just vacuum the living room, only mop the kitchen, stay out of the bedroom or clean just a section of the dining room. You’re able to save up to three different maps on the app, making the X1 range a good fit for multi-storey homes. On top there’s a single button which starts the cleaning process. An integrated LED light indicates status – it’s white when cleaning, blinks slowly while charging, or turns red if there's trouble. Above the button is a tiny Wi-Fi status light that glows when connected.

An all-in-one flooring cleaning solution that won’t blow your budget

The Deebot U2 also has mopping capability, but it’s hard to recommend this as a reason to buy it, particularly if you have mostly carpeted floors. That’s because the unit isn’t equipped with sensors to tell the difference between hard floors and rugs and carpets, and will therefore happily mop over your carpets as well. In our testing, the bot easily mopped up spilled red wine, and we were pleased to see that it was actually absorbed into the mopping pads, not sloshed around the tiles. We were also quite impressed by the X1 Turbo’s performance with more dried-in stains, like the kind you might find on your kitchen or dining room floor.
