About this deal

A tale of smarts, personal courage and — even knowing what happened on June 6, 1944 — suspense. Where would we be if these troubled, eccentric and hang-it-all characters hadn’t known how to lie, and lie well?” Without giving too much away, the part that I found most fascinating was the connection between organized crime and the CIA and the FBI, the story behind the murders of Marilyn Monroe and the Kennedys. Double Cross' is the 13th in the Alex Cross series and in my opinion the best yet. In typical James Patterson style the chapters are short, intense and so easy to follow it makes you just want to keep on reading. The author eventually decided to move to New York and worked for an advertising agency as a junior copywriter. The North American company would eventually see Patterson become its CEO. While he was working there in 1976, the author saw his debut novel published. The Thomas Berryman Number was initially turned down on the behalf of no less than 31 publishers but went on to win praise and an Edgar Award. Finally, in telling the stories of the agents he really does look at their motivations. The men and women's reasons ran the gamut - from patriotism, one was a Polish Fighter pilot who despised the Germans, to greed, a couple of them were looking for someone to bankroll their lifestyles, to boredom with life and the thought that spying would be “exciting”. The author includes an epilogue that tells what happened to the main characters after the war that I found extremely interesting. The plot wasn't bad, there are so many different sociological aspects that could be examined in the context of this series, but it was quite disjointed compared to the clear lineal structure between the first three novels.

These are increasingly important books to be read by all – particularly in view of the current political climate and the ever more disturbing rise in the so-called ‘alt right’ / white supremacist groups in certain parts of the world. Realising that Sephy wishes to die, he decides that killing her would help her, and opts to leave Sephy to suffering. He gives Sephy permission to call an ambulance for Minerva and tells her that since he knows how much she cares for her family, he will use her baby to hurt her. Sephy threatens to kill him if he hurts her child, but resorts to pleading with Jude to leave the two of them alone. He leaves just as the ambulance arrives, with a new plan in mind; Sephy makes Minerva lie about her injuries. The series is speculative fiction describing an alternative history. The series takes place in an alternative 21st-century Britain.
