If the price of a Freddo had increased alongside inflation, it would cost just 15p today - and still weigh the original 20g, instead of the measly 18g version we ‘enjoy’ today. Based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and CPIH (including housing costs) used for official inflation measurements, if a Freddo cost 10 pence in 1999 and the price rose in line with inflation then it would have cost The spiral chocolate bar - which took its name from the spiral like chocolate shape inside - was first launched in the north east of England by Cadbury in the 1980s. After proving to be exceptionally popular it was rolled out across the UK and became a firm favourite among chocolate fans. This means that if we were subjected to the same terrible Freddo treatment as our brothers on the other side of the world, you'd be being charged 45p for the equivalent weight - and the price would reach the equivalent of 80p in 2030. The Freddo bar started life in the 1930s but was relaunched in the 1990s at the price of 10p. 1 Had the price of Freddos stayed in line with the average rate of inflation in Britain, Freddos would today be priced at around 15p. Yet the most common price for the anthropomorphic chocolate frog currently stands at 25p - a staggering 150% increase.Inflation figures are based off the accurate historical data, and predictions for the future are based on a static rise of inflation based on the average rate over the last 16 years (around 3.9%). British people are known around the world for that one timeless question; a question that defines us; the question that determines the state of our once great nation: As frustrating as this is, it is worth remembering that it isn't just Freddos - and chocolate more generally - that have become casualties of the cost of living crisis. Prices have soared on hundreds of items at a time when most people can ill afford it.

People get so angry about this that it's hard *not* to find the information. Weight changes (similar for Mars) are consistently well recorded and, outside of the huge local store inflations, the RRP is accurate. On the whole though, it's been remarkably close to the appropriate figure - 1p difference this year, in fact - and is a great example of how big business doesn't have to rip us off for our fast-food staples and nostalgic endeavours. The company has been accused of "shrinkflation" - reducing the size of a product while keeping the price the same to boost profits. However, parent company Mondelez blamed costs associated with the production of its chocolate spiking. So next time you hear someone say those words 'How much does a Freddo cost?' maybe offer them a kind word before you answer. If you think that's bad, just be thankful we aren't Australian. As, whilst our bars may have grown in price and not size, theirs actually shrunk to an underwhelming 12g. Then again, this isn't exactly surprising behaviour from Cadbury, considering they recently shrank the size of its Dairy Milk sharing bars by 10 per cent - but did not reduce the price.

If you needed another stark reminder about the ever rising rate of inflation, and cost of living, seeing a Freddo listed as 26p will be it. True, it is lower than the dizzy heights of 30p which it reached in 2017, but for reference, the last time Freddos were 10p was in 2006 (oh, the good old days). Dream was a white chocolate bar made by Cadbury that was similar to Nestle's Milkybar. No longer manufactured in the UK you can still buy the Cadbury white chocolate bar in parts of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. However at Christmas, a white chocolate advent calendar from Cadbury is often available to buy in England with the chunks behind the doors closely resembling the now outdated Dream. The Cabana is another bar with its own group appealing for its returnNo: The Freddo Index is limited in its ability to fully explain inflation, as it only represents the price of one specific good. Moreover, inflation is a complex phenomenon influenced by multiple factors. A cookie set by YouTube to measure bandwidth that determines whether the user gets the new or old player interface. Although this is not an exact science - well, exact economics - by any stretch of the imagination, the price of a Big Mac is apparently a fantastic indicator of the rate of inflation across the UK over the last 15 years.

Simple exercises like these are brilliant at distilling abstract concepts but they cannot substitute for years of work on complex problems. Yet critics point out that these methods are far from accurate. Official calculations of inflation look at the values of average shopping baskets using hundreds of items - not just Big Macs or sweets. If the price of a Mars Bar had remained consistent with inflation, we'd be sitting at a fairly bitesize 44p. Instead, we're left with a 60p bill (87p come 2030) on a bar that's also notoriously shrunk over the years. Weight of a Mars BarPiero Sraffa was an Italian economist who spent decades working on the subject of inflation. During that time he survived two world wars, persecution for his work and received two threatening telegrams from the fascist Following fascism, a set of ideologies that advocates dictatorial power, political violence, suppression of opposition, traditional gender roles, and official racism. dictator Mussolini The fascist dictator of Italy from 1925 to 1945. himself - all with the aim of contributing to economic theory. It is impossible to say what he would have thought of the Freddo Index. Where possible, we've gone with the RRP - yes, we've seen the pictures of shops selling 65p Freddos and we're just as appalled as you are. Freddo Frogs became part of the Cadbury product range in 1967, when MacRobertson's was sold to Cadbury. In Australia, Freddo Frogs are manufactured in Ringwood, Victoria and Claremont, Tasmania. Since the success of Freddo, an alternative chocolate named Caramello Koala (formerly Caramello Bear), also made by Cadbury, has been created. Caramello Koala is the only flavour in which the chocolate is not shaped like "Freddo".
