About this deal

The Peak District has a wealth of accommodation options to suit all budgets. The course is centred around the village of Hathersage but the nearby villages of Bamford, Hope, Castleton or Grindleford are all ideally situated for the course. There are plenty of ideas available on our accommodation guide here. The Limestone at the Peak has been put on the map by UK bouldering pioneers - Moffatt, Allen, and Proctor - who started by putting up first ascents at Stoney Middleton. The most popular locations to climb in the Peak District include Stanage Edge, Froggatt Edge, Curbar Edge, and Burbage. The climbing routes vary from easy to hard, so you should choose your location based on skill level. All of the routes chosen here are a short walk away from a car park, ensuring that they are all easily accessible. Locations for beginners and children Burbage South Boulders

Thankfully it wasn't all YouTube content generation, and some climbing occurred. Although sadly missing out on the flash of the classic The Traverse (7a+) by virtue of not matching the arête at the end (sorry, but rules is rules) no such fate awaited him on The Ace and the problem saw its first flash, cheered on by Jerry, no less. The amazing part of this however isn't really that he flashed it; it is relatively basic afterall and he's the greatest climber to ever walk the earth. It's more that with the wealth of homegrown talent and strength in our ranks these days nobody else had beaten him to it in the 20-odd years since the problem was put up. What have all the strong kids being playing at? We clearly need a few more to quit the competition scene! As mentioned above, the weather is a factor for choosing where and when to go, but only prolonged rain is likely to stop the determined. Generally October and November are the wettest months but can still offer great days with fantastic autumn colours. February is the best choice for the hardcore with a winning combination of little rainfall and low temps. At any time of year, a westerly or southerly breeze will soon dry the crag in only a couple of hours. We can’t talk about Peak District without mentioning the Stanage Area and more specifically, Stanage Plantation. With a host of classics, Stanage Plantation’s gritstone boulders are the most famous of the lot in the UK. Whenever you buy a new belay device, always make yourself familiar with the manufacturers instructions for use that come with the device. Petzl's instructions for the GriGri include:

High Neb is the second-most popular area, a little longer walk but plenty of classics thoughout the grade spectrum. If further sessions to develop your skills are required, your instructor will discuss this with you and advise you on the most appropriate pathway for you. The Northern End is more broken with a few bigger buttresses; Crow Chin, Marble Wall and the Stanage End would be the popular 'best bits' on many lesser crags. Although the change in weather means we get to use the tower less over winter, we still have plenty of climbing sessions available over the winter that we can run in our indoor centre! So if anyone can find a reference to 'The Peaks' (or 'Peakes') that predates 1663, I shall humbly start calling it 'the Peaks' (possibly through gritted teeth). But until then, Peak is what I prefer to call it.

Walking boots, approach shoes or sturdy trainers. The walk ins to crags is likely to be over challenging ground and it may be wet or muddy. This poll and my earlier one are merely attempts to get a slightly more quantitative feel to some of the ideas/issues than the many threads of comments/opinions - not sure it's worked but I thought it was worth trying anyway. Approach Notes– Follow the distinctive path from the car park up towards the crag, the boulders are situated below the crag. Despite being set in a landscape of similar features, as long ago as folk began naming things, Stanage was simply itself: The Stone Edge.
