About this deal

If it wasn't just about money, you wouldn't know her, Lancelot. You found her in a brothel, naked but for the boots. These women by no means should be under-estimated or disrespected. They are in their own right powerful creatures of desire – who main purpose – is to survive this evil world. So in as much as I would like to point fingers – I have to say, I myself personally do not have a stellar record to do so. Private Dancer – THE CONCLUSION

The writer has a very interesting way of telling a story. We get to know about story and the various characters from the characters themselves. So there are a lot of viewpoints in this-Joy, her sister, Pete’s friends but most of all Pete. It’s refreshing and although there isn’t much difference in the tone of the voices, there is a difference in their situations. Since this book is written mostly from the prospective of guys, most of whom are in Thailand for the sleaze, you get a different perspective of bar girls than you would from other people, or woman for that matter. Perhaps the reader needs to have an Anglo-Saxon or Thai mentality so that it could be understood what keeps going wrong on both sides: Pete keeps being stupid and naive because he assumes Joy has similar moral norms than the Western girls and the same applies to Joy having strong ideas about the roles of men and women which clearly don’t apply on Pete. Hence, the object of the book is to illustrate the underlying differences between two cultures. Stephen Leather has written many other books situated in Asia and perhaps this popular topic was chosen only to get as much publicity for the book as possible. Well chosen topic it was as the book gained over 40 000 readers worldwide already when it was published only in the Internet. Joy was bright, she was smart, yet she was reduced to taking her clothes off and sleeping with men because that was the only way she could earn decent money. It was a form of economic rape: if Joy had been born in Europe or America she’d probably have been at university or working in an office. Stephen Leather

I have not read any of Leather's other works, so I cannot say if this is his pinnacle, his 'Catcher in the Rye', or if this is merely the level he usually writes at. However, after finishing this book in three swift sitings I am raring to read more of his other offerings.

Please note that this review comes with the Kindle edition, so some of the parts about formatting and such could be because of that. clubs, street vendors, and of course, foreign sex tourists. Thailand nightlife in an average Go-Go bar. The novel is divided into small segments – each narrated by its respective character along the way. And it is absolutely intriguing to see how each person feels and thinks about the exact same situation as the story unfolds. urn:oclc:record:1359397442 Foldoutcount 0 Identifier privatedancer0000leat Identifier-ark ark:/13960/s26qsjsbqs7 Invoice 1652 Isbn 9789749275535 Action from the get-go, this book hooks you from the first line. I’d heard some sob stories from farangs I‘d met and Leather’s take on what can and still does happen in ‘The Land of Smiles,’ rings very true; perhaps it even serves to educate those horny guys that come to Thailand and leave there brain at the airport! The album was released on May 29, 1984, and became an outstanding global commercial success. [21] [22] [23] The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart for ten consecutive weeks [24] and remained in the top ten for 39 weeks from August 1984 to May 1985. [26] [27] At the 1985 Grammy Awards, Private Dancer won four of the six awards for which it was nominated.

Relates the stories of various foreigners who live in Bangkok long-time, expats, or sexpats if you will. The stories are feasible but Thailand can be very beautiful and a rather “normal” place too. What we should learn about this book: Is just a matter of choice and taste. Thai hookers are there to service you, and it's their work to make money first of all. Shall not forget that and enjoy what's on offer. Michael Lydon (December 5, 2011). 1001 Albums: You Must Hear Before You Die. Hachette UK. ISBN 9781844037148 . Retrieved June 16, 2012.

It gets deep under your skin and completely messes with your mind, questioning everything you know about relationships and true love. Pete moves to Thailand from London for work. He gets involved with a bar girl and prostitute Joy and is naive enough to think it’s love. He does everything for her and she in turn is using him, as bar girls do, to get money out of him. She also has a Thai boyfriend who Pete doesn’t know about. This book provides a lot of insight into these white men/bar girl relationships. In a way, it’s the kind of book a man should read before coming to Thailand and getting involved with these bar girls.
