If it’s a general guide you’re looking for, then they’re fine but if you actually want to monitor your heart rate then this system does fall short and you’d be better off purchasing a heart rate monitor watch for this purpose.

Though, soft as the saddle is, if you’re not used to exercising it might take a week or so to get over any initial saddle soreness! One of the most recognisable brands in the world, Reebok doesn’t just do sportswear and trainers. They also make sports equipment, including exercise bikes and over the years they’ve shown us almost everything from the sublime to the err, less-so. We wanted to see what you can currently get from them at the entry-level point so see how their offering measures up against the competition, so we got in the Reebok One GB40 upright exercise bike for examination. Next under this review is the GB40s One Series which shouldn’t be confused with the GB40 above as there are differences in the features available and the flywheel weight for the GB40S is 3kg heavier than the GB40, plus there are 24 more resistance tension levels to work with. With a robust 9 kg flywheel at the heart of the GB40S, the One Series Bike delivers consistently smooth and seamless rotations for enhanced home cycling. Featuring a clear and intuitive 5.5" LCD console, the GB40S relays live workout data straight to your screen, allowing you to monitor and assess your training output for more motivated and effective workouts. Also providing your heart rate in real-time via the hand pulse sensors, the GB40S Bike offers a complete training picture. The flywheel here is 7kg, the pedals are self-balancing and in addition the foot pedal straps can also be adjusted. Please note that the battery needs to be charged initially for 8 hours when delivered and is then recharged automatically from your own movements on the bike thereafter so this is an eco-friendly choice. On a more positive note, it’s nice to see the addition of a user defined programme which is simple enough to set up and a recovery test that will rate your fitness on 6 levels ranging from poor to excellent. Again it would be nice if there were more than one profile, but one profile is better than no profile so we’re not going to complain too much here.

The console itself is well organised and logical without too many buttons which makes controlling this bike simple. The addition of a tablet holder and a USB charging port is a really nice touch, though don’t fall into the same trap we initially did and think you can connect your device to the bike – you can’t. The USB is purely for charging purposes but this does mean that you can take nice long workouts while watching your favourite shows or reading a book without worrying if you’re going to run out of power. Oh and there’s a water bottle holder. Simple in this case does not mean less. Included with the Reebok GB40s are 19 user programmes (12 pre-set), time target, calories, distance and heart rate that is measured from the pulse hand grips. This paired with the 32 levels of tension control make this the perfect combination for every level of fitness enthusiast. Negative points On the positive side, the 5.5″ LCD screen is clear and intuitive, and certainly all you’ll need to stay on top of your workout metrics. It displays the time, speed, RPM, distance, calories, pulse (via the handlebar sensors), and watts while allowing you to choose 12 motivational workouts + user-defined and HRC programmes.

The 9 kg flywheel helps to create a smooth ride and is suitable for intense workouts. Even the most experienced rider will find this bike to be reliable due to the 32 resistance levels of magnetic resistance. Additionally, the Reebok GB40 exercise bike comes with a tablet holder for easy viewing of fitness classes and a holder for keeping your water bottle within reach. There are 12 preset workouts including target workouts for time, distance and calories and there’s also a user-defined program function that allows you to create your own workouts and store them for later use. Ergonomically the GB40 is sound with plenty of adjustments to the height, angle and distance of the saddle, and along with adjustable handlebars, there’s enough flexibility here to allow pretty much anyone to get a good riding position. The gel-padded seat is comfortable though if you want something even larger then that’s easy enough as the fitting is standard. The 6kg flywheel, does do a fair job of keeping things fluid and steady all the way through the cycle. Overall the GB40 is comfortable with good ergonomics, and we shouldn’t be surprised that this is so given the manufacturer.When you have tried lots of fitness equipment over the years from many brands it’s really refreshing when something like the GB40s comes along. There are 8 levels of manual resistance to work through depending on how hard you want to work and both the saddle seat and handlebars are adjustable to suit your individual needs. Please note that the saddle height can be adjusted from between 66cm up to 90cm.
