About this deal

The Krups doesn’t suffer from the problem of many budget grinders – an inability to deliver a fine espresso grind – but it struggles at the other end, with some users complaining that they can’t get a coarse grind. Still, if you want great, fresh espresso on a limited budget, you won’t get better than this. The Sage Smart Grinder Pro is the grinder for you if you want a simple burr grinder for espresso that grinds your coffee reliably every time. This Sage model boasts a 16-ounce bean hopper that puts your beans into long-lasting stainless steel conical burrs to produce the finest ground coffee beans. It offers 60 grind settings, ranging from highly coarse to super fine and everything in between. Some automatic grinders are pretty simple: you add beans to a hopper, set the coarseness of the grind and hit a button. Others, however, will have a dial for setting how many cups you want to make or smart, digital controls that allow you to select number of cups, strength or dosage per-cup and the size of the grind, before dispensing the freshly-ground coffee into the filter or espresso machine handle of your choice. And lastly, does it complement your space? Manual (handheld) coffee bean grinders tend to be smaller, which could be a factor if you have limited storage options. The primary differences are that the motor is less potent (130W vs 165W), and you can only adjust grind via the hopper.

If you enjoy the journey of making the perfect cup of coffee for yourself, you may enjoy a manual machine or, at least, one with a lot of different time or dosing settings. In addition, you can change the grind settings through a simple navigation system. This grinder is built with 83mm flat burrs, hence its name.

Take your next step towards coffee nirvana by grinding your own beans

You get a richer, stronger-flavoured brew that reflects the subtle differences between different origins, blends and roasts. Moreover, you can control the grind, enabling you to mill coarse grinds for a filter machine or press, or finer grinds for an espresso machine or stove-top espresso maker. A second consideration is your budget: do you want to spend more on a high-end machine which does everything? Or do you want to go with something cheaper? The other thing I wasn't quite sure about was grind time or grind amount. What this relates to is dose, which means the amount of coffee we “dose” into our espresso basket, Aeropress, or V60 filter, for example.

The AeroPress has the longest range on this chart, the grind size measuring 320 and 960 microns. The AeroPress is a versatile product, allowing for many different brewing methods, techniques and customisation. To represent these factors, we have left the grind size range broad. The Maison & White Manual Coffee Bean Grinder is an inexpensive manual grinder that uses a crank handle. It can be set to different coarseness levels in much the same way that you set the coarseness on a pepper grinder, and it will hold approximately 50 grams of coffee in the feeder with about five times the capacity in the bottom container. If you are hoping for espresso fine ground coffee, though, you should be prepared to crank the handle for some time. In other words, it was the environment that the coffee machine was in, in which the changes were happening, not the hopper, but the hopper wasn't providing any protection against this change in humidity. Today, pour-over consists of pouring water over coffee grounds in cone or funnel shaped dripper containing a filter (typically made of paper or cloth). You really will not believe the difference that can make to the taste of your coffee. One great way of doing that is to use a burr grinder.A perfect grind should be finer than sugar but not too fine that it clumps together. If the espresso takes too long to extract, then grind it finer.

The Mahlkonig EK43 comprises several features that work together to provide a delicate, clean-cut, and flavorful coffee grind. However, burr grinders produce a more consistent grind that improves the coffee's flavour. Blade grinders can't be set as finely as burr grinders, but they can make enough ground coffee for an average-sized pot. Anyway, my search stopped at the Smart Grinder Pro. It was more than I was looking to spend (as the amount I was looking to spend was closer to zero), but at the time (and it's more or less the same now really) there wasn't really anything that appeared to be as good across the board, including ease of use, reliability, and compatibility with most brew methods including espresso, for this kind of price.

When grinding your coffee for a particular method, there will inevitably be particles that will be smaller or bigger than the range. Don’t worry though, as the range is not intended to be the boundary of coffee particle distribution, but where the majority of grounds should lie. This chart can display any commercial coffee burr grinder. It does not contain blade grinders as these do not grind coffee at a consistent grind size. What I mean by this, is that the hopper on the Smart grinder pro is great as hoppers go, in fact overall it's probably one of the best hoppers I've seen, but hoppers should in my opinion be used as temporary storage only, and not as permanent storage solutions.
