One of the best times to do ocean landscape photography is at sunrise or sunset. Being able to photograph beautiful seascapes painted with golden sunlight is a magical experience. I joined the Blue Marine Foundation as Project Manager for the Solent Seascape Project in February this year. I would say to anyone out there with a passion for nature and conservation, I know it can be tough, but keep doing what you are doing, as dream jobs do exist! I have a degree in marine biology from the University of Liverpool and spent many years volunteering with NGOs and doing environmental education before I moved to the south coast and spent more than a decade working as an Environment Officer for Langstone Harbour Board. That role stood me in good stead for this job as I now have a good network of partners to draw on. Because I have worked in the Solent for so long, I know partners’ skills and who to call for advice. And I have lived on the shores of the Solent all that time too.

That said, most ocean photos can benefit from using certain settings, so I’ll show you some good general seascape settings: Aperture for seascape photography The anemone has a carpet of stinging tentacles, but the clownfish feels right at home: it is immune to the stingers and uses them to protect itself and its eggs from predators. In return, it protects the anemone from certain species of fish that like to munch on the anemone’s tentacles. It's a win/win relationship! There are countless ways to approach coastal photography, but they all have one element in common: the water. Water can be used as the main subject in your seascape photos, but it can also be used to integrate and connect all the elements of your composition.Don’t forget to wash your tripod after every beach photography session to keep your gear in good condition and free from corrosion. Old McDonald was a damselfish: these little fish farm small gardens of algae on coral reefs. Some make their homes in dens excavated by sea urchins. Urchins like to eat algae but the damsel fish doesn’t like to share so they chase or carry the hungry urchins off the farm.
