About this deal

To learn more about the specimen, Valenzuela-Toro, Zicos and Pyenson had to rely solely on morphology — the study of an animal’s physical characteristics to determine its species. They did so by comparing the cast of the skull to more recent specimens in the marine mammals collection. By comparing the cast with other specimens from different species, they determined that it represented a male Southern elephant seal. It also had some marks that suggest it may have been butchered by Indigenous people after being found. It seemed unlikely that a complete skull was traded from South America to North America, according to the team. Instead, they argued that the seal likely strayed off its annual migration pattern and swam to Indiana by accident. That explanation aligned with behaviors other scientists have observed seals doing today. Burns, J.J. (2002). Harbor seal and spotted seal Phoca vitulina and P. largha. In: W.F. Perrin, B. Wursig and J.G.M. Thewissen (eds), Encyclopedia of Marine Mammals Academic Press. pp. 552–560. EPDM oil seals are less common. They are used in solvent, hot water and steam applications, EPDM resists low temperatures down to -50 °C and UV radiation well. Some types of EPDM are also suitable for higher temperatures up to +150 °C. EPDM oil seals are usually available upon request.

The name Skeleton Coast derived most probably from the huge numbers of stranded whales that lost their life here and whose skeletons could be seen all over the place. The Ovahimba who are settling in the far north-eastern parts of Namibia used the whale bones for building their huts. Most bones will have been cleaned and bleached by the sun, but any that need a wash can be soaked in a commercial denture cleaner or gently boiled in a solution of sodium perborate. The morning after a spring gale is an ideal time to walk along the beach to see what has been washed ashore. View our full guide to identifying these two species. How to identify cetacean (whale and dolphin) skulls and bones Although some of the largest harbor seal pupping areas are found in California, they are also found north along the Pacific Coast in Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. Large populations move with the season south along the west coast of Canada and may winter on the islands in Washington and Oregon. Pupping is known to occur in both Washington and Oregon as of 2020. People are advised to stay at least 50m away from harbor seals that have hauled out on land, especially the pups, as mothers will abandon them if there's too much human activity nearby. In high-temperature environments, polyurethane, silicone, fluorine, or fluorosilicone rubber should be chosen. Efforts should be made to reduce the oil temperature in the tank. In extremely low-temperature conditions, cold-resistant rubber should be used. One park ranger in New York City, which is dead center of its West Atlantic range, says that "New York is like their Miami resort." [31] This refers to the habit of young seals leaving Cape Cod and even some Arctic waters to inhabit the harbor in winter. In 2018 the New York Post reported that the harbor is now "cleaner than it has been in 110 years," [35] and since the first decade of the 21st century, the harbor seal has found the old turf of its ancestors to be a land of plenty and the water to be livable. Within sight of the New York skyline, known colonies of harbor seals are found on Hoffman [36] and Swinburne Islands [37] as well as portions of Red Hook [38] and Staten Island, [39] readily hauling out every from October until very early May. Known favorite foods of the seal are returning in grand numbers to New York Harbor as well as nearby New Jersey, from Raritan Bay all the way down the entire Jersey Shore, with schools of mossbunker regularly attracting harbor seals, their cousins the grey seals, dolphins and, most recently, whales. [40] Both the northern and southern shores of Long Island have a reliable population of harbor seals as well as greys, where they will take sand lance as well as some species of crab as part of their diet.

When you look at organisms, you realize they have a very broad way of doing things. Marine mammals appear to be able to get really far from their main geographic areas,” said Pyenson. “And species that can disperse across far distances are better buffered against sudden changes to their local environment.”Hoover, also rescued from a Maine harbor. Hoover became famous for his ability to imitate human speech, something not observed in any other mammal.

The California population of subspecies P. v. richardsi amounted to about 25,000 individuals as of 1984. Pacific harbor seals or California harbor seals are found along the entire Pacific Coast shoreline of the state. They prefer to remain relatively close to shore in subtidal and intertidal zones, and have not been seen beyond the Channel Islands as a pelagic form; moreover, they often venture into bays and estuaries and even swim up coastal rivers. They feed in shallow littoral waters on herring, flounder, hake, anchovy, codfish, and sculpin. [21] Seals in the United Kingdom are protected by the 1970 Conservation of Seals Act, which prohibits most forms of killing. In the United States, the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 prohibits the killing of any marine mammals, and most local ordinances, as well as NOAA, instruct citizens to leave them alone unless serious danger to the seal exists.

Things I write about

Seals have shorter limbs than most other mammals. Their limbs have evolved into flippers with true seals having more developed hind flippers and eared seals having more developed fore flippers. Popeye, the official seal of Friday Harbor, Washington, notable for her common sightings up until 2019, when she was presumed to have died. She was identified and named for her cloudy left eye. There is a statue of her in the Port of Friday Harbor.

ERIKS type R (type A according to the DIN standard) is identical in shape to type M, but has a rubber outer case with metal reinforcement on the inside. The rubber creates a good seal in the housing, even if the housing has suffered minor damage or is not in its best condition for other reasons. The RST version has a dust lip. These types are often chosen to replace a type with a metal outer case because they are easier to install and can cope with minor damage to the groove, such as scratches.Cape Cross is about 130 kilometers north of Swakopmund. The entrance fee is – as in all national parks – 80 Namibian dollars per person and 10 Namibian dollars for your vehicle. You can park you car close to the colony and then walk over wooden platforms with a fence over, through and between the seals. Our shared future with other species is about what just happened in a very tangible way and there’s nothing more tangible than having a museum record,” said Pyenson.
