About this deal

The mids are recessed with an added touch of warmth. This makes the male vocals more forward and highlighted more than the female vocals. In conjunction to the bump in the lower mids, the upper mids are toned down a bit, causing the female vocals and instruments in this section to sound slightly muffled or veiled. These is on-ear design, which comes with a few inescapable issues. One that we experienced is the headphones can pinch around the ear, resulting in a little bit of discomfort after prolonged use. Another is that the noise from the outside world leaks through, but some may actually awareness of what’s around them. The headphone was run for about 80 hours prior to listening evaluation which besides the Bluetooth mode was also performed with the SoundMAGIC A30 and ddHiFi TC35B Pro. All the above impressions apply to listening with the cable but the good part is that switching to Bluetooth with the aptX HD enabled is equally competitive.

The SoundMagic P23BT are very lightweight to the point that they feel pretty flimsy. They have a foldable design so that they easily bend together to fit into your bag when you're not using them. The ear cups are made from memory foam so while - to the touch - they don't feel premium, they feel good on your ears and the lightweight design ensures that they never feel cumbersome. On ear design, I have no discomfort throughout my listening sessions, however it does get a little uncomfortable when I am wearing spectacles. (Only on my left ears, which I suspect is due to the shape of my ear) The top end of the frequency range is well communicated with good brightness, clarity and sharpness. The piano that opens Joe Hisaishi’s Innocent from Castle in the Sky tonally sounds very nice, with distinct variation between the different keys being pressed that ensures the SoundMagic isn’t just a one-note player. It adds colour to the P23BT’s overall performance. The head band is made of rubber and is very comfortable (looking at T10, which hurts my head like crazy after a few minutes.). P23BT is also lightweight and is very comfortable to wear, it feels like I am wearing nothing at all, and what amazes me is it does not have that suffocating feel (unlike KZ T10).I haven’t experienced any particular issue with the connection walking through London and using them on transport, although I haven’t used the headphones for any calls. I’ll be updating the review as and when I get the chance to do so. Sound Quality Focusing on the sound quality itself, I’d say the asking price is a steal considering the sound itself is really good. However, the only let down I’d say is the build quality, which to me feels rather filmsy, but that’s understandable, possibly to drive the cost down. Hey, thanks for reaching this part! Hope you enjoy the read, even if it is quite long.... There are similarly priced/cheaper options in the Urbanears Juno and Ugreen HiTune T3 but we feel the EarFun offer better noise-cancellation and better sound than either pair.

I have heard of Soundmagic during my early days about their bullet styled IEM. Then I kinda stopped hearing from them until recently Caliya from Soundmagic approached me asking if I am interested to review some of their products. The P23BT don’t refashion the on-ear headphone experience but they work well enough in practice and are less inconvenient than some on-ears have been. Features The sound quality is similar to the WH-CH520 on-ears in that it takes on a smooth and bassy tone. Bass is punchy, the midrange is clear and detailed, and the upper frequencies and bright and clear enough to have some impact. The Final UX300 offer a more insightful performance (at least with its noise-cancelling off), but they aren’t as affordable as the Sony headphones, nor do they boast as many features for day-to-day use either. The noise-cancellation is solid at this price, focusing on culling low frequency sounds and clearing away ambient noise so it’s less of a bother. We wouldn’t say that these headphones clear away every noise they come across, but they’ll make the daily commutes and journeys around cities like London feel less chaotic and disruptive. The P23BT is my second encounter with a fairly neutral and reference-like tuning without severely boosting any given part of the frequency range.

About SoundMAGIC Headphones

Here we review the new SoundMAGIC P23BT, an on-ear model which are compact in size and lightweight too. They will fit well over a wide range of head sizes due to a good amount of adjustment in the arms and the clamping force is just enough to provide a secure fit without inducing any discomfort. I was surprised with the SoundMAGIC P23BT. I felt, on first look, that this would be another cheap and frankly, nasty, pair of Shenzhen-made headphones. They really surprised me though. So much so that this entire review was written whilst the SoundMAGIC P23BT were on my head belting out some Tion Wayne, SR and Pa Salieu. They don’t have ANC, instead rely on passive isolation, which is good enough for most daily use. These work wired too and come with a high quality boom mic attached to the analogue cable – this is a brilliant feature that makes them perfect for home office use too. We found that making sure there is no microphone boosting in the windows sound settings worked the best in terms of voice quality – but once set up the quality is excellent for video and voice calls when connected to a PC. These really are very versatile, and the boom mic is not something you see very often when it comes to this kind of product. What is unexpectedly good for such a budget on-ear headphone is the clarity and the level of separation inside the soundstage which although it is boxy and limited between the ears, nonetheless sounds airy and not congested, making the P23BT suitable for listening to large scale symphonic works and gaming.

Other than that, and the HP151’s long, snakelike cable that limits use to the home, this is an excellent pair of headphones. As it’s a removable cable, you can change it, but I’d still have preferred an alternative cable to be provided in the box. Comfort is good, with the right amount of clamp to provide a secure yet comfortable fit I had no issues with the P23BT during longer listening sessions. The earpads are soft and provide ample cushioning, the headband has minimal padding but due to their weight this didn’t seem to cause any issues for me. Features The separation is quite okay, the vocals and instruments are well separated however they are not that cleanly separated like what I prefer. However, the separation is better than KZ T10 in my opinion. Overall, the P23BT has surprisingly well-controlled lows. Having heard other SoundMAGIC products in the past, they surely focus on the low end most of the times, but they seem to have gone a different route here. My library mainly consists of Japanese music, so if you’re a fan of them like me, then we might have the same taste. I also listen to various genre like hiphop, rap, orchestra etc. but not that often compared to the Japanese ones. The P23BT are not masters of soundstaging, but that’s ok, they are on-ears and have quite a direct presentation but instruments are still easy to place within the limited soundstage. In my experience, other people can still hear the music I’m listening to when the headphone is at 80% volume, lower than that the sound leakage is almost unnoticeable. The SoundMAGIC P23BT is constructed largely of a PBS plastic with the headband being wrapped in silicone. The headphones can be rotated a small amount and can be folded up for easy portability. I was also surprised by the isolation here. With the volume on an almost unbearable 50%, there is only a faint sound coming from these when off the head at just 1-foot away. With them on the head, it’s even less. Perfect for those starting to commute again.

The microphone provides clear conversations and can also be used to activate commands using a voice assistant. Bluetooth 5.0 provides robust connectivity that can stream high-quality audio from Android or Apple devices without dropping out over a range of around 13 meters. All in all, I would definitely recommend this to someone who is in the lookout for an affordable and high quality sound headphone. In 2021 they released the SoundMagic P23BT on-ears, but they appeared to have gone under the radar. It would be a mistake to consider these headphones a busted flush, as they show that SoundMagic hasn’t lost any of the qualities that made the brand a reliable budget buy. Design
