Natürlich muss neben Tarkin und Piett auch Darth Vader einen Auftritt feiern, doch erst als Ciena auf die Devastator versetzt wurde. Bei seinem kurzen Auftritt wirkt Admiral Ozzel sogar wie ein williger Förderer Cienas, die dann bei dessen Tod durch Vaders Machtwürgegriff rein zufällig nicht dabei ist. Überhaupt scheint Ciena keiner einzigen Hinrichtung durch Vader beigewohnt zu haben.

Despite dealing with serious subject matter, the book is often quite humorous. One of the best parts of the book is how both characters completely misunderstand their respective factions. While Ciena Ree believes the Empire to be good and the Rebellion evil, Thane refuses to believe the Rebels could be as idealistic or noble as they claim. It takes Mon Mothma helping him through a drunken pity party to help him realize they are as down to Earth (Tatooine?) as heroes should be. After years of defiance, the many worlds at the edge of the Outer Rim have surrendered. With each planet’s conquest, the Empire’s might grows even stronger.For Ciena, the only words that can describe her would echo from the grave of the first Imperial she met – Grand Moff Tarkin.

After her announcement, Thane realizes her plan, breaks onto the bridge and tries to convince her to save her own life by coming with him. She refuses and an epic fight ensues. Thane is finally able to stun her as the ship falls deeper into the atmosphere. They make it to an escape pod and launch much too low. After a rough landing, they are met by a New Republic team. Ciena is arrested as an Imperial war criminal. She awaits trial, but Thane is convinced she will be released as he now believes in the goodness and fairness of the Republic, vowing to wait for her as long as it takes so they can be together. Time and again, the vicious raiders known as the Nihil have sought to bring the golden age of the High Republic to a fiery end. Time and again, the High Republic has emerged battered and weary but victorious thanks to its Jedi protectors—and there is no monument to their cause grander than the Starlight Beacon. Climaxing with The Battle of Jakku, Ciena is the commanding officer that chooses to crash the destroyer into the planet, an “ethical” decision she learnt in the early days of her training at the beginning of the novel. But was the decision based on her having lost her love, Thane, and the unbearable life in the Empire being all she had left, or had the darkness of losing that love scarred and changed her….it was quite an emotional end, and left open enough for the reader to form their own opinion.

You can also expect to see such fan favorites such as Admiral Ozzel, General Rieekan, Mon Mothma, Princess Leia, and Vader himself pop into the story narrative. These are not forced cameos, and are in fact great little moments in Thane and Ciena’s tale. We also visit Yavin, Dantooine, Hoth, Bespin, Endor and there is even time for a mention of Lothal, throughout the novel, and it is intriguing to see the events from an angle we were not previously exposed too. Two and a half years pass and the two continue competing, climbing the ranks again to the top of the cohort. However their competition is no longer friendly. They no longer interact socially and drift apart in many ways. Thane begins to become somewhat disenchanted with the Empire while Ciena becomes even more loyal. They are assigned to different specializations as they approach the end of their time at the Academy, Thane to Elite Flight and Ciena to Command. This causes them to see each other even less. Despite the distance though, they can't shake the lifelong connection they have. After the Battle of Hoth, Ciena recognizes Thane's flying style from battle footage and realizes that Thane had joined the Rebellion. This causes a dilemma within Ciena, who still has feelings for Thane but is loyal to the Empire.
