About this deal

Start by shading an area you want to work on with a light shade. This outlines the shape of the fur shape you are delineating, for example the tail. Shade in the direction of the fur flow. You will probably not need the tracing paper to do this. If you are drawing an image of an entire dog the face may not necessarily need to convey that much detail, but you’d be surprised how different dog faces are!

I also like that the dogs debate methods for gaining the hamburgers - the crazy variety of methods demonstrate innovation/invention/problem solving and that is neat.

Christmas Cards & Gift Wrap

For a dog breed drawing my first step is to think of a breed. As a dog owner and lover of all things dog I already know many breeds. Some are easier to draw than others. Some are more appealing than others. A monster at the bottom of a hill eats all the garbage generated by the town on top of the hill. This provides two important benefits: The monster is happy with plenty to eat and the town stays nice and clean. Unfortunately, as the town grows, so does the amount of garbage the monster must consume. He gets bigger - and he starts burping. This is, as you can probably guess, a bit unsightly and stinky. In the end, the kids figure out how to solve the problem - despite the nasty mayor's doubts and objections. This made me giggle quite a few times with its silly (but sometimes sophisticated) humour. I am confident that both my boys (8 and 9 years) will LOVE it. Tom’s first jobs out of college were in politics. He worked for U.S. Senator John Glenn and as the Chief Speechwriter for the Governor of Ohio. He has also worked in marketing and advertising. He likes writing books for kids a lot more than writing speeches and other things for grown-ups. He thinks kids are way smarter than grown-ups.

I have a vague memory that I liked that the kid says his drawings are really bad but HE STILL DOES THEM! Still uses them to make a story. I wouldn't be such a big fan of the negative self-judgement of his work, but I love that it doesn't stop him.I avoid books about dogs, as a rule. For some reason, stories about animals in pain affect me very strongly. And it seems like every story featuring a dog includes bad things happening to the dog. I'm sure there are good and/or deep reasons for this, but suffice it to say I do not like them. Dislike. Create a sense of the tail being 3D. Add shade to create shape. Usually the outer edges of the tail can achieve this by adding a darker shade on top of the lighter. Shade darker on the edges and add any straggling hairs around the new shape in the direction of the fur flow. When you return to your paper keep your stroke minimal when transcribing the shape of the animal’s muscles on the paper. You can now do so around the skeleton frame. Remember, this is still the first stages of getting an accurate sketch on the paper. These muscles will eventually be covered in fur as your drawing develops so don’t worry too much about detail. Your drawing should be gestural! By gestural, convey the sense of movement through the shapes you see.

Another point to note is that your lines now need to be more shaped as opposed to straight. Still try and keep this minimal and gesture at shape as opposed to too much detail. In part, I agree with him, although there is no argument to say you shouldn’t just get on and draw and develop your independent style with or without anatomy knowledge. You’re not lazy per se! My opinion, however, is that by learning the basics through the art of really looking at your object and taking a little more time to understand will refine your drawing practise and shortcut time and frustration later on. The million dollar question would be, can you tell which breed you have got down on paper by the way in which you have transcribed the shape of the head?

Did we miss something on diversity?

And there were many funny bits, too many to list, and so I give it four stars for a. charm and quirkiness b. young reader appeal. Poo-Poo is not named after, you know, going to the bathroom. He got his name because he’s a poodle. He’s really good at smelling things. And he’s even better at describing those smells. He grew up on a dairy farm. Poo-Poo is very good at smashing his head into things – on purpose. One more thing: He really doesn’t like squirrels. Really. A lot. Salvador Dali amusingly was known to have said that “if you refuse to study anatomy, the arts of drawing and perspective, the mathematics of aesthetics, and the science of colour, let me tell you that this is more a sign of laziness than of genius…”
