About this deal

In the London version of the game, the orange group is made up of Vine Street, Marlborough Street and Bow Street. So they understand the generalisations … but they also make them? That’s right. It’s kind of hypocritical, I know. Dan Taylor, MONOPOLY Manager at London-based Winning Moves UK - the company producing this game under license from MONOPOLY owners Hasbro - announced the launch at West Park this morning when he was joined by the Mayor of Wolverhampton, Councillor Christine Mills.

Mr Taylor said: "We are delighted to be making this exciting announcement that Wolverhampton is 'Passing GO'." The spirit and shape of this customised edition will remain the same as with the traditional MONOPOLY board game - so, for example, the playing pieces will stay the same as will the rules and the four corner squares (GO, Jail, Free Parking and Go To Jail). Set to feature for the first time as a playing piece will be a cat to sit alongside the Scottie dog and the other famous counters like the boot and ship. So what does Monopoly for Millennials involve? Well, it’s just like normal Monopoly, but instead of money you collect ‘experience points’ by visiting such things as a music festival, a farmers’ market, a vegetarian bistro, a bike share, your friend’s couch … Ancestors, eh? Who needs them? Hasbro has replied to the complaints with a slightly smug statement, saying: “With many of us being millennials ourselves, we understand the seemingly endless struggles and silly generalisations that young millennials can face.”

Molineux, Wolves Speedway and Wolverhampton Racecourse Dunstall Park will all make up the orange section of the board, its creators have announced. Huh. Only a baby boomer would believe that you can generalise about hundreds of millions of people. You’re probably right. And it will be the great Wolverhampton public who will get to vote for the 22 property landmarks that make it onto the board.

Some of the Community Chest and Chance cards are being customised too, with very bold plans for one to say 'You will be fined for going to Birmingham'. Molineux, the home of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, tops the set and will carry the highest value in the group. The board is being released on October 9 and creators have also given a sneak peek of what the box containing the board will look like. A total of 22 Wolverhampton landmarks will feature in the game, replacing the traditional properties such as Mayfair, Trafalgar Square and Park Lane.Councillor Mills said: "MONOPOLY is a classic game for all the family and it's fantastic news that, nearly 80 years after it was first launched, the great and greater Wolverhampton public will be able to expand their property empire by snapping up some famous landmarks in Wolverhampton."
