About this deal

These two cases mark a departure from the types of cases the ACLU had argued from its inception in the early part of this century. It had argued the free speech and free association rights of unions in the beginning. Then during World War II and after, it argued for free speech rights for Nazis, and prosecuted Japanese internment cases as unconstitutional. During the Cold War it argued for the free speech rights of Communists. During the Civil Rights era, it argued the civil rights cases of minorities, and also paid special attention to the constitutional rights of prisoners and criminals (i.e., police brutality). The two cases above were the only cases involving religion in which it took an interest. Did she always think she’d survive the crossing? She shakes her head. Before the trip she was warned that if she was approached by bull camels she must shoot first and think later. “All they want is a female camel and they will do anything to get it, including killing you.” One day three bulls approached. “I shot two dead and only wounded the third, who ran off and would have had a very slow and miserable death.” How did you feel that night? “Pretty bloody awful but you just do what you have to do.”

I was not doing anything special, but suddenly it felt as if a lightning bolt entered my head, as if the right part of my brain suddenly opened, and with it came an extraordinary clarity. I sat down in wonder, and saw that the whole of reality was in fact moving like a kaleidoscope. I saw that everything, including my own mind, was constantly transforming; I was not really fixed in one place. I saw that this changing reality was an eternal movement in a timeless world. (c) I discovered it was much easier to accumulate things than to discard all the goods I had grown attached to Op den duur wordt het verhaal wel wat langdradig en gaat het in de herhaling. Meer spirituele ervaringen op meer prachtige plekken in Nieuw Zeeland. Bovendien is het ook niet bijzonder goed geschreven. I’d expected Miriam to look bedraggled, maybe with a couple of teeth missing, but she’s immaculate and smiling broadly, her teeth shiny white (she usually cleans them with ash); no dandruff, legs shaven, she smells of campfire. She is powerfully built; almost the double of Sarah Connor from The Terminator. A Dutch Sarah Connor – she was born in Holland. Her husband, Peter, proudly tells me she could beat most men in a fight: “Miriam is the hunter and I’m the cook. She’s much stronger than me. Women are better shots,” he says. “And they’re more careful,” adds Miriam. “They are less driven by trophy hunting. They have less of a need to prove themselves.” I sat in the sun for a horrible, stinky half-hour to Q: ‘The unexpected is often the most interesting!’ ‘Marvellous things that might change our entire life could happen to us, but you can’t plan for those things,’ (c)And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place to care for her for 1,260 days.

And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and three score days. The timeless beauty is just astonishing,’ I said shyly. ‘I want to try living without any barrier between the naked earth and myself. Cooking on fires, drinking pure water, sleeping on the ground . . . The wilderness might be able to teach us something, if we have time to listen.’ (c)
