About this deal

See if there’s an AdBlue filler cap either next to the fuel filler, in the boot or under the bonnet.

AdBlue is added to your exhaust and mixes with the fumes your car produces. It reacts with nitrogen oxide gas (NOx gas) created by your engine and breaks it down into harmless nitrogen and water vapour. The car will give you plenty of warning that the AdBlue tank is running low. You'll usually see a text warning on the dashboard when there's around 1500 miles' worth of AdBlue left.Keep in mind that all vehicles equiped with this exhaust technology have an urea concentration sensor, so you should never try to dilute the AdBlue or use other liquids. Now the question - is he right about the air mixture? Thinking about it now, there will always be air in the mixture (the hose itself that it's flowing through is initially filled with air, furthermore, the bottle itself has air in it - it's not airtight. AdBlue is an exhaust fluid, not a fuel additive. It's stored in a separate reservoir and is topped up via a (usually) blue filler cap located either next to your fuel filler, in the boot or under the bonnet. The AdBlue tank is usually located under the boot floor, where the spare wheel might have been in the past. But it's more important to know where the filler for it is located. For safe transfer of Adblue® from storage containers to the vehicle tank. Equipped with manually operated anti-spill valve.

If you’re interested in the science, the AdBlue mixture is made from urea (the stuff you find in urine) and is injected in tiny quantities into the car’s exhaust gases, where it rapidly breaks down mono-nitrogen oxides in the fumes. This helps to reduce the environmental damage caused by diesel fumes and keeps the air cleaner – which is good for us all. In particular, it cuts NOx pollution and particulate emissions. Interestingly he also told me that I don't need ADBLUE, and that all DEF fluid is exactly the same (didn't think the dealer would ever tell me that lol). There’s no manual way of resetting your AdBlue warning light – the only thing you can do is top up. Once you’ve refilled to the minimum level, the warning light will normally disappear (though you may need to go for a short drive for the refill to register). Some vehicles notify you of the capacity of your AdBlue container. If you do not know how much AdBlue you need for your car, you will have to look it up online or in the user manual. Once you figure out how much AdBlue you need, look for the refill procedure specific to your vehicle. It's a trade name registered by the German car manufacturers association, but is the most recognised form of Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF).

Can you overfill the AdBlue tank?

AdBlue is a consumable for diesel-engined vehicles worldwide, and is injected into the SCR catalyst to break down soot and unburnt fuel into water and nitrogen. Both elements are harmless once they exit the exhaust system of the vehicles that generated them. Tiny amounts of AdBlue are injected into the flow of exhaust gases. At high temperatures AdBlue turns to ammonia and carbon dioxide. We cannot stress the importance of not pouring AdBlue in the fuel tank or any other fluid instead of AdBlue in the dedicated tank for the substance. Please, don’t do this, as it will severely damage your vehicle. Unless you refill with the manufacturer-designed containers, a funnel will be necessary for the top-up with AdBlue. The secret is that some vehicles have a special AdBlue filler nozzle to prevent spills. If your car has one of these, you might need to get a refill bottle from your vehicle manufacturer, along with a few extra liters of AdBlue from an independent brand. Not all car manufacturers use AdBlue technology. But chances are if you’ve got a diesel from Jaguar, Land Rover or any French or German manufacturer, and it was registered new after September 2015, it’ll use AdBlue. How does AdBlue reduce exhaust emissions?

You’ll need to get the tank drained and the contents disposed of safely before you can refill it. Call us, and we’ll sort the problem out. That being said, the parts guy convinced me that it was a bad idea. He states that when you use the funnel you're introducing air into the mixture while pouring it in, which in the long run will form crystallization in the tank and clog the system. He says he's seen this numerous times because people are using the funnel system instead of the airtight adapter.

Is all AdBlue the same?

Before we get into details regarding the refill procedure and precautions necessary to achieve one on your own, we must explain what AdBlue is. The name has been trademarked by Germany’s Association of the Automotive Industry and is a marketing term for Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
