About this deal

Squirrels are well known for trying their best to get a free meal and who can blame them? But when you've spent your hard earned money on bird food expecting to see birds in your garden, most people don't want to see squirrels eating it. In the autumn and winter, when there are less insects about, a Great Tit’s diet changes to favour seeds, nuts and berries. Particular favourites during these times are ivy berries, juniper berries, and mistletoe berries. Which Wild Bird Food should I feed Blue Tits, Coal Tits and Great Tits? Though the winter weather was mostly mild, there were a few short spells of snow which drove birds into gardens in higher numbers. The first species affected by this are often the birds in the thrush family, including our resident Song Thrush and Mistle Thrush, migrant Redwing from Iceland and Fieldfare from Scandinavia. Some birds will use a bird box in the Winter to roost. A bird box provides a safe, warm and dry place for a small bird. So, when thinking about the best time for putting up a bird box, no time is a bad time but for nesting the new year is ideal.

Even switching the foods used for bird feeding could be beneficial, by avoiding sunflowers, peanuts and fats that are favoured by the common tits and, instead, providing millet or cereals that are attractive to declining House Sparrows, Tree Sparrows Passer montanusand other farmland birds.Squirrels are every bird-lovers worst enemy. If you have a regular squirrel visitor who eats your bird food and leaves nothing for anyone else, there are plenty of steps you can take to keep them away. Coal Tits are the only tit to create a larder. They will collect food and store it for later, so they are able to get through harsh weather or times when food is scarce. Birds prefer natural wood in a bird box; it mimics their natural surroundings of trees and hedgerows. That doesn’t mean put bits of wood inside, I just mean that a wooden bird box will provide familiarity. p>This bird used to be known as the hedge sparrow but isn't actually part of the sparrow family.

Peanuts and fat are the best foods for Blue Tits, especially during the winter. Place whole peanuts in a mesh container, and ideally hang more than one in different areas so that the shyer tits don’t get outcompeted by aggressive House Sparrows! It may be harder to see this bird in your garden as they are quite a shy species and usually only come to bird feeders in winter when natural food sources are low. You can entice Marsh Tits into your garden with the food they'd typically find in the wild, such as Red Dari Seeds, Peanuts, and Live Wax Worms. For a blend that is slightly more tailored to Tits, our High Energy No Mess is also perfect for year-round feeding. p>This bird is famous for smashing open snail shells to get to the juicy interior.

The same steps can be taken to clean bird baths and water stations. If your bird bath is a heavy, permanent fixture, tip or scoop the old water out before cleaning and rinsing out thoroughly. As with all other species, when feeding Tits, we recommend starting with a good base blend specific to that species. This way, you’ll ensure they’re getting the vast majority of nutrients they need in a single food. Of course, you can put a plate of seed out on the grass and the birds will find it. Some might like it, some might not. The danger here is that other ground feeding animals will also find your offerings, such as rats and squirrels. Even other birds you might choose to avoid will undoubtedly steal all the food from other birds – pigeons spring to mind, as well as magpies and crows. Five Ways To Feed Birds In Your Garden.
