About this deal

Look for lawn scarifiers with good-quality metal teeth. Stainless steel or tempered steel teeth will last longer than plastic ones, for example. Petrol: If you own an area of more than 500 m2, then it’s better to invest in a petrol engine. These are the most powerful scarifiers and hence seeks more maintenance than the manual and electric options. Also, a petrol version is comparatively costly than the other categories. Bosch is a brand that just about everyone is familiar with. I’ve personally used several Bosch products across my garden and home and have always been happy with how they have performed.

If there’s a group of gardening tools that have people confused, it’s these three right here. But let’s get a few facts straight before we begin – There’s no difference between today’s range of scarifiers and lawn rakers. It’s just that when people refer to rakes, they mean those simple, long, light leaf rakes operated manually. Lawnrakers or scarifyers involve more intense lawn care. These machines dig into the grass and create slits through your lawn to remove decaying, organic matter beneath the newly shooting live grass. Though there are several varieties of lawn scarifiers available in the market, your choice depends mainly on the state or position of your lawn. Scarification is the best way to help keep moss at bay by removing organic matter such as moss or thatch from the surface of your lawn. Also, this stops your grass plants or lawn seeds from becoming suffocated before you plant them – so you won’t have to go through the stress of re-seeding!Electric: Corded and cordless versions of lawn scarifiers are the most common. These machines either draw power from mains or a rechargeable battery. Manual: As its clear from the name, such scarifiers does not have any power source. Instead, such a machine seeks your muscle power to mover over a lawn and cut through the thatches. They are available in affordable price ranges but are good only for small lawns. So, you can consider one of these tools for any yard up to 100 m2. However, modern lawn rakers are mower-like machines complete with dozens of accessories and functionalities. People in the UK refer to these lawn rakers as scarifiers because, well, we invented the language and will play with it as we see fit. The Bosch ALR 900 has a very impressive 50 litre grass box, now this may not sound large, but when compared the Flymo at just 34 litres you will see this is large for a lawn rake of this size. I really struggled to find any major downsides to this rake, it even comes with a 2 year warranty if you register the rake with Bosch.

Large wheels are very efficient when you need to cover a rough lawn. It’s the reason GC-SA 1231/1 comes with comparatively bigger wheels, covers difficult lawn and places minimal stress on the soil. The machine has a collection bag worth 28 litres. With all the power and features, the scarifier covers an area up to 300 m2. It has a long handle, which you can fold after the maintenance session is over. Moss spores in April and September, so the best time to kill moss is in early spring and early autumn (when there is enough warmth, fertiliser and moisture available for the grass to recover). The most widespread method is to apply a moss treatment or chemical moss killer before raking the moss out a week later. An alternative method is to rake first then use a lawn moss killer to remove the remaining moss. However, filling spreaders and sprayers with moss control products or weed killers will not 100% get rid of moss on your lawn.Of course this is open to interpretation so if you don’t fall under every single one then don’t worry I’m sure you’ll still love this product. It has loads of great features that I’m sure you make use of even if you’re not its perfect customer. Does this make it more practical than it’s closest competition? well, yes I think it does for people with smaller lawns and limited space for storage with the ability to get the job done without emptying the collection box as often. There is also a very handy and well positioned central handle that makes carrying the almost 10 kg rake to the garage or shed very easy. Petrol lawn scarifiers are powerful, versatile and great for large lawns. They are ideal to use in areas with lots of weeds because they aerate effectively and are heavy duty. An electric scarifier may just “bounce off” in dense, heavily weeded spots. Whereas a petrol scarifier will grind it out and finish the job. However, petrol scarifiers are heavy, emit fumes, and can be time-consuming to start. They are noisy, so you may want to wear ear defenders, and will require maintenance such as filter and spark-plg changes. Assembling garden tools often feels like a chore, so I always appreciate products that require minimal assembly. This is what VonHaus promises with their 2-in-1 electric scarifier, and that’s a promise that they’ve managed to keep. Assembly took about 15 minutes overall– you simply need to attach the handles and the trigger, then swap over the aerating roller for the scarifier when necessary. The only tools you’ll need for assembling this machine are a Philip’s screwdriver and an Allen key (the Allen key comes included).

The Cobra S3840V 38cm (15in) Cordless Battery Scarifier & Aerator was a pretty straight forward setup – not too many bits to put together There are variations of scarifiers on the market, you could opt for a simple garden rake or a manual scarifier with wheels if you want to do it by hand. Though many gardens are quite big and it can be a tough job by hand, so we recommend using an electric scarifier for small to medium gardens and a petrol scarifier for larger gardens. So with that said, let’s look at what you need to consider when buying a lawn scarifier / raker: What to consider before buying a lawn raker and scarifier?

You should always start scarifying with the machine on its highest setting, and so this is what I did when I turned on the UniversalRake 900. However, this barely made a dent in the grass, so I moved it down one step lower. Again, the results weren’t anything to get excited about, so I put it down to its lowest setting. Cobra S3840V has a working width of 38 cm. All thanks to its powerful Lithium-ion battery, it works for up to 35 minutes; depending upon the lawn conditions. The machine has 5 operation heights between 10mm to 5mm. With such power and features, the machine is suitable for a small to medium-sized garden. But for purposes of this article, we will use the terms scarifier and lawn raker as interchangeable. So, what exactly is the difference between a lawn raker and aerator? a. Aeration But why is that important? Well, the more oxygen in the soil, the healthier your grass will be! In addition, the best lawn scarifiers also help keep weeds at bay. They really are exceptionally useful little machines! Understanding ‘Working Depth’

However, once assembly was out of the way and I had a good look at the machine, I was instantly impressed. It comes with five height settings, from -12mm to +10mm (most other scarifiers have just three or four), and there’s a single lever to adjust the height. You can adjust the height of the handles too or fold them away to easily store the machine. Being a 2-in-1 model, this product comes with two interchangeable rollers; one for scarification and one for aeration. Scarifying is a process in which a tool is used to remove moss and thatch from the top of your grass. The idea is that the unwanted material on top of your garden makes the movement of nutrients and oxygen to your grass harder. Removing it allows the grass to breathe and grow and ultimately more grass seeds are planted giving a fuller, less weedy lawn.

Now to touch upon the product’s main flaw – its grass collection bag. At 45 litres, it’s an adequate size, but that’s where the praise ends. It feels quite flimsy, it’s awkward to insert and remove, and it doesn’t fill fully. However, many people don’t actually use a collection bag when scarifying, preferring instead to get the job done first before raking or mowing the discarded thatch up. If this is what you plan on doing, then the issues with the collection bag won’t really matter. One thing to bear in mind, however, is that a wider width tends to mean a bigger machine. Which also generally results in a heavier machine. You’ll just need to weigh up the pros and cons of width vs. weight and see which model best fits your needs. Finding a comfortable lawn scarifier
