As a speaker with a single driver, the MiniRig 3 goes above and beyond to deliver an unforgettable stereo sound experience. The Minirig Mini is an interesting proposition: the stark design will be appreciated by some, its small stature will be attractive to the space-conscious, and the sound is solid. The Aesthetic is straightforward and industrial-looking. I like it, and it is available in several different colors for you to choose from. It's a case of them trying to build the most compact and best-sounding speaker and then trying to make a housing around that that is exceptionally robust while adding minimal bulk to the design.

Minirigs is a UK-based company that has taken a completely different approach to designing a portable Bluetooth speaker. One of simple design and outstanding build. The simplicity and attention to detail and performance are what sets them apart. A couple of years ago, they released their Minirig System of Bluetooth speakers. You can read our original Minirig speaker review here, but the short version is that I was blown away and declared it my favorite Bluetooth speaker.2 years later, do I still feel the same? Yes. Have I found anything better? No. Not in a direct comparison of sound and performance with its competitors. However, at the louder levels, the low frequencies do begin to dwindle. MiniRig 3 Review: Pros and Cons To power on, there is a small bump of a button that, when pressed, will start glowing. You turn the unit on and search for the Bluetooth device, and you are connected and ready to play music from the go.

That said, an individual Minirig, used on its own, is a mono speaker. This is as opposed to a stereo unit that other small portable units aspire to be. This is important because, by making a single unit mono only, Minirigs can fit a larger 3-inch speaker into this device. Other companies try to cram multiple speakers of inferior quality into their units. Here, the 3-inch diaphragm can move more air and produce a way better sound and a much fuller and deeper bass response. For the rest of this review, as mentioned, we will be talking about the use of 1 single Minirig speaker being used on its own, without being daisy-chained to other units. Essentially we want to look at how the Minirigs perform as a stand-alone portable travel speaker.

There is a single button that controls power, pairing, and gain output. The sides have points of connection for daisy-chaining the speaker with other Minirigs products such as the bass cannon and Minirig 2 or just another Mini to make a 2.1 style mini hi-fi system. One of the standout features of the original speaker was the exceptional build quality. That continues with the new model. It's a seriously well-made bit of kit. The speaker consists of a single 52mm diaphragm driver housed in a tubular metal chassis with a metal grill outside. It's powered by an internal 15w amp. A testament to how well the Minirig holds up through punishment is that it has been on three long-distance motorbike and camping trips with me. The first is from Deli to Shimla in the Himalayas, the second is the full length of Vietnam, and the latest the up the spine of the Peruvian Andes and through Colombia.With so many Bluetooth speakers now on the market, it can be hard to choose one. Many are laden with features, and others can be had at super low prices. The most important thing to me is sound, and for the life of me, I can’t think of anything this size that sounds even close to being this good. Really to get something better sounding, you are looking at getting the Minirig 3. Inside the Minirigs app, you will also find support for a five-band EQ system that allows you to custom tweak the sound of your speaker. I was surprised just how well the speaker took the EQing because I have had some units struggle in this regard in the past. Link-Up Mode Just a single speaker will be more than enough to really get people gathering together in an open space, or even encourage some complaints from the neighbors. So many other companies try and stuff multiple small diaphragms (tweeters, bass ports, etc.) into their small speakers that they end up with that weak and tiny sound. Minirigs solution of just putting in one single, high-quality unit inside. This seems so simple, but it provides the fullest, richest, deepest listening experience in this kind of form factor. Remember, what you’re getting here isn’t a full-size set of monitors with their own dedicated tweeters and subwoofers.
