About this deal

Osmo oil hit the British market around 15 years ago and since then it seems to have taken over!! It is everywhere!! In this review I’m going to talk about the Osmo products I’m most familiar with and give you my honest opinion based on my experience as a professional decorator. As well as giving you my Osmo oil review, I want to talk about the best place to buy Osmo oil. I hope you find it useful. In addition to its protective properties, Osmo Top Oil has a natural, satin finish that enhances the wood's natural grain, making it perfect for use on a variety of surfaces including furniture, doors, and floors. If a higher gloss level is desired, after thoroughly drying apply Osmo Liquid Wax Cleaner (also available as Spray) thinly and polish when dry. A. Apply Osmo Top Oil to kitchen worktops and other work top surfaces thinly and evenly with a lint-free cloth or good quality natural bristle brush, and wipe off any excess oil from the work top. Repeat as above 2-3 times allowing adequate drying time between coats. This applies to all variations of this product. Q. What is the best oil for kitchen worktops? Clean old microporous stains thoroughly. Old paints and lacquers must be completely removed. As a general rule, wear a dust mask during sanding works.

It seems there is a lot of confusion out there over the differences between all the Osmo products. I am asked all the time about how to choose which finish to use, and am constantly told the numbers just add to the confusion. And I totally get it. I felt the same way when first starting to use Osmo on my own projects. While I won’t be covering every single product Osmo makes, I can offer some guidance on the ones I do. I’ll try to make this as simple as possible. A. Osmo top oil clear matt is ideal for oak kitchen worktops. It is easily applied, very durable, resistant to scratches, scuffs, stains and liquid spillages. Osmo worktop oil is also very easy to maintain and patch repair. If you would like to better retain the natural, untreated look of your oak worktop surfaces, consider Osmo Top Oil Natural. 5ml sample sachets are available for testing. Q. Is Osmo Top Oil food safe? TopOil 3028 and TopOil 3058 Clear enhances the tone of wood (permanent wet effect). TopOil 3068 Natural is slightly white tinted and counteracts exactly this effect. If applied correctly, 3068 Natural protects wood nearly invisibly and the natural colour tone of wood is preserved. TopOil 3068 Natural is visible as a slightly white chalky surface on dark/reddish wood species. Applying excess TopOil 3068 may lead to a white chalky surface. Remove visible white pigments before allowing the surface to dry. Always do a test area before starting any project to assess product suitability and final finish. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on the tin at all times. Osmo Top Oil is ready to use and does not require thinning. Stir well before use.

There is a couple of downsides to choosing Osmo oil on an exterior over other products. The first, you need to give your timber extra coats of oil!! The more protection you can give external timber the better, so bare timber should get at least 3, maybe even 4 coats of Osmo oil. The second is your timber is going to need topping up with Osmo every year or 2 or it won’t last. One plus point is Osmo UV-Protection oil remains microporous, meaning you can apply additional coats further down the line without the need to sand. Q. Is Osmo Top Oil clear matt the best worktop oil for new, untreated, English Oak kitchen work top surfaces? Other household cleaning products such as vanish, bleach, baking soda etc. are likely to cause severe discolouration or staining. Sand wood surfaces carefully. Begin with coarse sandpaper then progress to finer grades– final sanding work for furniture P150-240 (depending on wood species ). For kitchen work tops using absorbent hardwoods like Oak or Beech, final sanding grade P120. For very absorbent woods like Pine, sand to a maximum of P150.

Wood pre-treated with Osmo Wood Protector 4006 may appear a little more dark and colour intensified. Always trial apply Osmo Top Oil 3068 Natural over the Wood Protector 4006 to ensure the final appearance meets with expectations. For kitchen worktops, Osmo Wood Protector 4006 is an optional pre-treatment for absorbent wood like: Pine, Birch or Spruce. Osmo Wood Protector 4006 will help to raise the water repellant qualities of the timber prior to applying Osmo Top Oil. Osmo Top Oil Natural (3068) Is designed to better retain the natural, untreated look of lighter woods such as Oak, Pine, Larch and Beech. It is not recommended for use on darker exotic hardwoods such as Iroko as it may produce a slightly milky or white film effect on the surface. This is caused by the very small amount of white pigment used in the oil to retain the natural, untreated appearance of lighter coloured timbers

Osmo Top Oil Acacia (3061) is a lightly tinted version that adds a brown hue to worktops for an elegant finishFor dark and extractive-rich woods (e.g. Iroko, Teak, Mahogany, Sapele, Wenge, Merbau, Jatoba, Cedar etc.), we recommend using Osmo Wood Wax Finish Clear Extra Thin. A trial application is recommended. Some woods are highly porous and require an especially thin application, as a result the drying time can be increased. One thing you need to remember when using Osmo oil is it doesn’t work too well over previously sealed timber. You can use it on bare timber, or you can use it over the top of itself. Avoid using it over anything that already has stain or varnish on it. Apply the worktop oil thinly along the wood grain using an Osmo Easy Pads, Osmo Soft Tip Brush or clean, lint-free cloth My preference is the satin over the matt as I think it gives you the most dramatic impact. The best thing about any Osmo oil is how rich it makes your timber look!! Osmo brings out the grain like no other product I have used in my professional career, except maybe Fiddes Hard Wax Oil. Even when using tinted Osmo oil you loose nothing in the way of character and charm from the wood.

Osmo Top Oil Graphite (3039) is a lightly tinted version that adds a dark grey hue to worktops for a stylish finish Looking for a high-quality wood finish that will protect and enhance the natural beauty of your surfaces? Look no further than Osmo Top Oil! A. Osmo TopOil dries in 8 to 10 hours under normal drying conditions. Lower temperatures and/or higher air humidity can increase the drying time. Allow for good ventilation while drying. Q. How do you apply Osmo worktop oil? Osmo Top Oil Terra (3038) is a lightly tinted version that adds a dark brown hue to worktops for a rich toned finish I live in a Victorian seaside town with a lot of old houses. One of the services I offer as a professional decorator is the renovation of old floorboards. Now old floorboards were never meant to be on show when installed and they’re often very beaten up. I quite like that though as it just adds to the character. Osmo Polyx-Oil is my product of choice for coating the floorboards up for a few reasons. The rich, deep, subtle finish has the perfect affect to suit any older house or farm cottage. The finished product seems to last for years and years.

Add Osmo Wash and Care concentrate to mop water and clean the surface with a damp (not wet!) cloth. Applying the product too generously and insufficient ventilation lead to delays in drying time. For cabinet interiors and drawers, apply max. one coat thinly with a cloth. Allow for good ventilation while drying.
