About this deal

The 525Mag4 spool is forged and machined aluminium, so it’s ultra-light offering several advantages. Being light, it takes less inertia and power from the lead in flight, so the lead flies further, and the reel casts further. Also, on initial release and in free flight, the spool is more controllable by the braking effect and suffers less from overrunning due to the revolving weight in the spool being less. These spools are also tough and are highly unlikely to suffer from line crushing pressure when big fish are fought and retrieved on very tight lines from a long distance out. The 525 is the perfect size for all round beach fishing situations, but that does not mean it is limited to clean ground by any means. Magnetic brakes - Controls the speed of the spool whilst casting reducing the chance overrun tangles if the spool spins too fast Both multipliers are fitted with an adjustable, magnetic brake system with extended adjustment knob for superior control. The adjustment knob will make it easier to adjust the drag to accommodate the fishing conditions on that given day and allows experience casters to refine the cast during mid-cast.

This drag system can apply a whopping 20lbs of direct drag pressure too, and will pretty much wear down any big fish you’re likely to hook off the shore. The Mag4 range is most definitely a hit for me. I will be putting these rods to good use, especially with a fixed-spool outfit in mind. The Penn 515 MAG4 is a narrower spooled version of the classic 525 and this makes it a great reel choice for using with finer lines. The lighter and narrower spool also allows even longer casting making the 515 a perfect reel for targeting larger hard fighting fish at maximum range on clean to mixed beaches as well as uptide and light-medium down tide boat fishing applications. Your choice of fishing reel is just as important as your rod. The right reel will ensure smooth casting and reeling, offering both performance and durability in the harsh saltwater environment. Strong & Durable Line

Straight out of the box, what this reel is good for is predictable, painless general fishing where absolute maximum distance is not a priority. It’s great strength is its versatility. It’s pleasant to use on a light rod (this would pair nicely with a 2-4oz outfit in a surf bassing situation, for example) but is still fine with being strapped to the bottom of a 14 footer and used to haul out a ray. I mostly plan to use it for ‘third rod’ fishing, where I’m doing things like feathering, prospecting for smaller species or trying an alternative bait to what my two main rods are fishing. It can also double as a spare in some situations too, in case I have any issues with my usual Fathom 15s. Selecting the right fishing line is crucial for landing that prized catch. In saltwater fishing, where fish can be larger and more powerful, choosing the appropriate line is essential. So Much More Improved features include an instant finger adjustable external extended magnetic braking system knob, extra strong CNC gear technology and live spindle with free floating spool, making the spool totally free from restriction and drag. Find a preferred setting that you’re happy with and you will have so much fun. Each cast was a joy with no horrible grinding noises when winding in; that’ll be the stainless-steel gears and pinion, which are so much better than bronze versions. The inboard spool bearing are premium oiled allowing the spool to spin freely on the floating spindle.

The star drag wheel is easy to adjust just with the thumb, and we found the drag is capable of relatively fine settings which accommodate both lighter lines down to 15lbs up to heavier lines of 25lbs. Reel frame, side-plates, and handle Only the two inboard bearings in the spool affect spool rotational speed. While the shaft itself rotates in a pair of bearings, these bearings do NOT effect spool speed, only coming into play when the spool is under load, ie retrieving a fish. The beauty of keeping an initially well-designed reel in a product range over time and improving it with each new series has proved of major benefit to Penn regards overall sales and a built-up strong reputation that guarantees sales. Buyers of this reel also benefit from the continually improving features and performance. You’re getting proven quality with a higher and higher degree of performance each time a new series is introduced. You can see why this reel has sold so well, and proved so popular with the everyday angler, as well as the more specialised anglers and experienced casters. The handle knob on these handles are rugby ball shaped and a lot larger and stronger than the standard handles. A direct swap using the original fitments! No additional parts are necessary! The 515 MAG4 is perfect for targeting tough ground bass as well as general beach work, but with its greater line capacity the 525 MAG4 is the reel to choose for long range beach and mixed ground fishing. As already indicated, our reels have been fished hard over varied terrain. In the surf, long, smooth casts are easy, controlled, and reliable whatever the weather conditions. The brake adjustment is precise and instant and remains easy even when the hands are cold and wet. First up for me was some casting with the Mixed Ground rod with the six-ounce (170g) rating. Using a multiplier, I started with a simple overhead thump which was okay, but much preferred a steady swing with a reasonably long drop. There is plenty of power to release in the second half of the blank, and once compressed you can hit some really good distances.

Based on the original 525 Mag the Super Mag has been tweaked to offer more reliable and smoother performance. With additional magnets on the mag carrier it offers a greater range of braking levels while ABEC 5 spool bearings smooth things on their way. Tuning is very similar to the standard Mag, so only the two inboard spool bearings need attention more than a twice yearly service in normal use. The mags come off in equal increments, so each step will increase/decrease braking by the same amount. While the additional magnets offer increased braking, like all reels, start slow and work up to a level of braking that suits you. We’ve also noticed that those clever engineers at Penn have made an unseen and, as far as we know, an unpublicised adjustment to the free spool lever. On the previous series 3’s, the top of the free spool lever at both extremes of movement would touch the metal surround, running around the rim of the side-plate marking the metal and eventually taking the chrome off. On the new 525Mag4’s, there is an increased gap between the lowest point of the free spool toggle and the chrome rim. No more marking! Well done, Penn! We have been asked by many customers to supply a larger handle for the MAG4 reels, with a Rugby ball shaped handle knob Adjustable brakes - Allows for adjustments on the brake system to facilitate maximum distance with control The spool spindle also runs on two premium quality stainless steel ball-bearings. Again, this allows the spool to revolve freely and ensure long, smooth casts and a smooth retrieve. Adjustable magnetic brake systemPosition one is 74mm from the centre of the handle knob to the centre of the handle bushing, the attachment point
