The party was even worse than I feared. As each little girl arrived with her mother they all stared at my outfit, especially my padded bottom with the little fluffy bunny tail. Several of them innocently asked why a boy was wearing tights and a leotard. One of the little girls wasn’t accompanied by her mother but by her older sister.Carolyn helped me out my underwear and then assisted me in getting on my nightwear. A nappy! I was 14 years old! I wasn’t going to wear a nappy, no matter how difficult the ridiculous costume was to get off. I told her so. I appeared at the top of the stairs. I was a lovely vision in white. The maid had certainly chosen well for there wasn't a hint of masculinity left in me, rather I (now her) looked the perfect little princess. The dress was all white lace accented by delicate pink satin bows across the bodice and at the puffy sleeves and hem. From their vantage point, the two women could easily view what must have been several layers of crinolines under the wide almost floating skirt. Around my waist was a four inch wide pink satin sash tied at the hip with a huge bow. I stepped carefully down the steps, my feet in white patent leather Mary Jane’s, highlighted by white anklets trimmed with a turned down pink lace cuff. I remember the first time I tried on tights – and did I get it wrong that time. I rolled one leg up as far as it would go then had to stretch so far to reach the other toe that I could feel the material begin to tear. I stopped, rolled the first leg down a bit then to the second. Gradually I worked the strange feeling material up both legs towards the top. I looked to see how my feet and lower legs glistened as the sheer material flexed and stretched. So beautiful. Then as I stood and pulled the tights upwards, I could feel the whole of my leg enclosed and enveloped in the quite wonderful sensation.

In a week’s time it’s Lucy’s tenth birthday. She’s going to have a fancy dress party for a dozen of her little friends. I can’t think of anything worse than a dozen or so ten year old girls running round squealing and screaming, so I'm planning to go out for the afternoon.
