About this deal

ensure the return of used tachograph charts from drivers. Note that this responsibility continues after a driver has left employment until all charts are returned When driving a vehicle fitted with a digital or smart tachograph on a journey that is not in scope of EU/ AETR rules it is recommended, but not legally required, to select ‘out -of-scope’ in the tachograph. Details of how to do this will be contained in the user manual for that model of tachograph. Driver cards and records

Continuous Driving: There are limits on the number of hours a driver can continuously drive without taking a break. This helps prevent exhaustion on long-haul routes.A "European arrangement in regard to the work of driving personnel engaged in international traffic" (AETR, from French " Accord Européen sur les Transports Routiers") became effective on 31 July 1985.

The maximum daily driving time is 9 hours although this can be increased to 10 hours twice a week. The weekly limit is 56 hours between 00:00 on Sunday and 23:59 on the following Saturday. In any two consecutive weeks the total driving limit is 90 hours.

Tachograph rules, also known as tachograph regulations or driver hours rules, vary by country and region, but they generally govern the use and operation of tachographs, as well as the maximum allowable driving and working times for commercial drivers. These rules are in place to promote road safety, prevent driver fatigue, and ensure fair labour practices within the transport industry. Below are some common elements of tachograph rules: Drivers must operate the tachographs correctly to ensure the charts record accurate information. For instance, the tachograph should be perfectly calibrated through the attached plaques to confirm the time is displayed in the correct local time in which the vehicle is registered. What Period of Time Does One Tachograph Chart Cover? retrospectively use the manual input facility on a digital tachograph when the card is next inserted Confirms that the tachograph is working properly, and the time displayed shows the official time of the country in which the vehicle is registered. Conventional tachograph calibration rollers are free running rollers, the vehicle transmission is used to drive the rollers at high speeds for calibration work.

ensure that all duties conducted since the driver card was last removed from a tachograph are manually entered onto the card record, using the manual entry facility on the tachograph Distance travelled is marked in the closest section to the centerfield, this area is called the distance trace. The stylus will move up and down whilst travelling, producing a zigzag pattern known as a V trace. Each complete V represents 10km travelled, the total distance can then be calculated via counting these zig zags. This is then cross-verified by the stated odometer readings. This records the time a driver is using a vehicle and the engine is running, including when they’re parked. Other work Digital tachographs use driving symbols to show the different driver statuses during working hours. This is to make sure that the drivers don’t infringe the laws around their drive and rest times. In cases where a vehicle that comes within the scope of EU/ AETR rules is at a separate location that is neither the driver’s home nor the employer’s operational centre where the driver is normally based, but is at a separate location, the time the driver spends travelling to or from that location to take charge of or relinquish that vehicle, regardless of the mode of transport, cannot be counted as a rest or break, unless the driver is in a ferry or train and has access to a sleeper cabin (if interrupting a regular weekly rest period), or a sleeper cabin, bunk or couchette (if interrupting a regular daily rest period or a reduced weekly rest period). Even if the driver is not paid or makes the decision themselves to travel to or from home/ base the travel time cannot be counted as rest or break. Travelling time must therefore be recorded as “other work” or “availability” in accordance with the above descriptions. Mixed records – analogue and digital/smart tachographs

Tachograph symbols obviously simplify the use of a tachograph for drivers. It was decided to use multiple symbols to increase the utility of the device for drivers and managers.

There are two types of tachograph, analogue and digital, however all commercial vehicles first registered on or after 1 May 2006 must be fitted with digital tachographs (unless exempt).

Normally, EU legislation comesinto force after a long period ofpreparation and negotiation. Eventhen, there is normally a periodof about two years between thepublication of a new EU regulationand it entering into force. In thiscase, the draft regulation wasissued on 15 July, published on31 July and in force a mere 20days later on 20 August 2020. Why are the changes suchan issue?
